I'm not a big fan of Anita Shreve, so an audiobook seems like the perfect way to experience her book, since I move at the pace the author has set rather than skipping ahead. I liked and believed in the characters, and was satisfied with the story's resolution. It's also an amazingly good use of the paradox of being snowbound: cold, dark and isolated, but also free from social expectations and restraints.

At first I was disappointed in the reader, Alison Silverman; she seemed flat and uninflected. Then I realized that the narrator, a 12-year-old girl, living with only her father in a small town, is in fact very unsophisticated. I'd like to think that Silverman deliberately chose a voice to match the way that Nicky would probably sound, a decision that added to the success of this audiobook.

Returned home in my audio bookbox. I've read this one before -- in fact, I'm pretty sure it was the first Anita Shreve book I read, & that was on audio as well. As I recall, it was "okay."

I enjoyed this as much as other books I've listened to by the author. Quite an interesting story of a rescued baby and what the rescuers and the birth mother go through when they meet up.

Told through the eyes of a 12-year-old girl (which is a very effective device).
