I spotted this in a bookshop and, since I'd read the short story of the same name, bought it.

We get the short story almost unchanged as the first chapter. De Lint then explores the implications of the friendship between the two girls, developing their characters and their background. This is done well; and some of the points he gets across about cultural differences are well made.

Unfortunately de Lint has put too many of his other Newford fantasies into the setting, and the hidden world is a bit crowded for credibility.

Nonetheless, he does Borrowers almost as well as Mary Norton, and as for the ending... as I said, on the internet, no-one knows you're a Borrower!

For release.

My 7 year old granddaughter and I read Circle of Cats and Seven Wild Sisters and were very sad when we finished them. I realise this book is intended for an older audience but we are going to give it a try...more later...
