A bride in Japan moves in with her husband's family and pretty soon she is no longer sure what to think. All families have their own rituals, secrets, and credos, like a miniature religious cult; these quirks may elicit the mirth or mild alarm of guests. If it's a Japanese one with a history, then brace yourself: some surprising truths lurk around the corner.
I enjoyed this book, which was a quiet thriller. I think it's best to read it in one or two sittings to keep the atmosphere created alive.
While some of the things revealed in the story seemed too obviously set up well before they occurred, I could feel the confusion and fear of the main character as she tried to adjust to married life.

I agree with KiwiinEngland - a quiet thriller, great atmosphere, but some things are alluded to too early. Still, a good, creepy read. Nice characterisations, especially the protagonist, Noriko, has a convincing voice.

Not a bad book overall, easily read and one that didn’t take too long to get through. (It only took me 8 years to actually start it...) I wasn't entirely convinced by Noriko, to be honest. While I could understand her willingness to ignore her suspicions later in the book – after the family had done some work on her - I did find her a little too trusting early in the book.
In the post, for a Literary Isolationist.
