It was obvious that Chicago during World War II was well-researched, making the time and setting come alive; unfortunately, it seemed to be at the expense of the characters, who ended up being rather one-dimensional. I think the author spent so many pages convincing me of Kitty's shallow nature, that I was never convinced she truly had matured and changed by the end of the book. The letters from the boys overseas were poignant, but I wanted the characters to react to the letters rather than just read them aloud. I think this book could have been really good if it had been twice as long. There just weren't enough pages to allow the characters to develop or to include a satisfying ending.

I'm travelling to Chicago soon, so I plan to release it in the wild there.
