From amazon.co.uk:

Fate takes many forms ...When Henry receives a letter from an elderly taxidermist, it poses a puzzle that he cannot resist. As he is pulling into the world of this strange and calculating man, Henry becomes increasingly involved with the lives of a donkey and a howler monkey - named Beatrice and Virgil - and the epic journey they undertake together. With all the spirit and orginality that made Life of Pi so treasured, this brilliant new novel takes the reader on a haunting odyssey. On the way, Martel asks profound questions about life and art, truth and deception, responsibility and complicity.

What beauty. What horror.1

I'll quote an example of the former:

Daylight has reached its last hour. The earth and the trunks of the trees are burnished red by the setting sun. Sweeping through the land comes a wind, a most gentle of cavalry charges. It's a fragrant wind, smelling of soil and root, of flower and haystack, of field and forest, of smoke and animals, but also carrying, by virtue of the distances it has covered, the very smell of vastness, a smell moist and cavernous. It's a beautiful wind, an exciting wind, a giving wind. Riding upon it is the collective news of all nature.

Masterly crafted, engaging to read and, ultimately, difficult to stomach. Which must mean that the author succeeded in what he set out to do: to paint allegorically an historical event the impact of which human consciousness will (and should?) never fully fathom.

1 These should have been exclamation marks, but I often don't like exclamation marks. It's like applauding at the end of an ethereal violin solo.

Typical Martel, he lures the reader into a world where the line between fact and fiction disappears. By the time the reader tries to create some distance between himself and the content implied, it's too late. I was reminded by this great writer that some journeys have to be travelled and completed, regardless if they are classified as fact or fiction. They may be the plain simple truth. I was reminded of things simultaneously in the past and in my face, that is, if I were to dare open my eyes and look at them. Thanks Yann.
