Frances sets out from the Christmas holiday back to the school…and a ferocious snowstorm overtakes the carriage. Then a stranger overtakes her carriage, causing it to skid off the road into a snowdrift. The owner of the carriage, Lucius Marshall, rescues her, and they spend three unchaperoned days together at a nearby inn. He's nobility and loves her unpretentiousness...she can cook wonderful meals, spar verbally with him and frolic in the snow. At the end, he wants to marry her, but she rejects him. He continues to pursue her and fates keep throwing them together. She finally divulges her reasons for leaving London, only to discover they weren't such secrets after all. In the end, they marry, leaving behind three other teachers for the next books!
