Madame Bovary (Penguin Classics)
4 journalers for this copy...
Flaubert's grand experiment writing about contemporary people and 'the banality of provincial life'.
THANK YOU!! For this book!!! :D
While I really liked Gustave's writting style, I didn't like Madame Bovary as a character. She was spoilt and selfish.
I finished the story and just felt very sorry for Charles and Berthe.

The book was in my mailbox today. Thank you Sfogs.
Backside: Emma Bovary is beautiful and bored, trapped in her marriage to a mediocre doctor and stifled by the banality of provincial life. An ardent devouer of sentimantal novels, she longs for passion and seeks escape in fantasies of high romance, in voracious spending and, eventually, in adultery. But even her affairs bring her disappointment, and when real life continues to fail up to her romantic expectations, the consequences are devastating.
Flaubert's erotically charged and psychologically acute in 1857. It was deemed so lifelike that many women claimed they were model for his heroine; but Flaubert insisted: 'Madame Bovary, c'est moi.'
Edit my opinion: Emma is always looking for confirmation. Her husband did not have any suspicion when Emma is with her lover. The man who loves her deeply only see her beauty .. Emma seems so spoiled and put themselves in debt without considering that bills must be paid at last. That everything eventually ends in sorrow is not strange.
I thought the novel was very readable. It describes so well the feelings of sadness that Emma had. It seems that Emma suffered from a depression as she tried to compensate by trying to get confirmation that she will do through her lovers and by buying things even though there is no money
