Edit December 9, 2020: An outstanding collection of classic sf around the theme of the most massive empires imaginable. The only drawback is that the scope is so immense that it makes for a bit of difficult comprehension in such diversity of alternate galactic systems. And of course this is all old-school stuff, so it is very human-centric, with models based in ancient Earthly empires of swords and marching armies, rather than more modern concepts of information battlespaces and microscopic and macro technologies. But for an overview of where the art form has been, this is a good volume.
