In 1990 begeeft Amélie san zich op de Japanse arbeidsmarkt. Ze vindt een baan als tolk in Tokyo en maakt kennis met een meedogenloze bedrijfscultuur. Bij Yumimoto, een firma met een onwrikbare hiërarchie, wordt van de werknemers een kadaverdiscipline verwacht.
Haar superieuren beschouwen de westerse dadendrang en ondernemingslust van Amélie san als het toppunt van subversie. Ze slaagt er niet in zich te plooien naar de absurde logica van het Japanse bedrijfsleven, wordt herhaaldelijk weggepromoveerd en eindigt haar carriére twaalf hilarische maanden later als toiletjuffrouw.

Vandaag uitgelezen, erg leuk boek. De Japanse cultuur, en zo ook de Japanse arbeidscultuur, blijft een bron van verbazing - en van vermaak. Zo is het ook met dit boek.

Het lijkt me trouwens ook wel enigszins toepasselijk om dit op kantoor te releasen....

Reason for reading: I found it at Abunai and I had been interested in reading this book for a few years already. The only other book of Amélie Nothomb I had read was "Cosmetica van de vijand" which I did not like, but at the back there were descriptions of other books by her and this book was about her when she worked a year for a Japanese company, which sounded interesting.

Mijnheer Haneda was de chef van mijnheer Omochi, die de chef was van mijnheer Saito, die de chef was van juffrouw Mori, die mijn chef was. En ik was niemands chef.
Ik kan het ook anders formuleren. Ik was ondergeschikt aan juffrouw Mori, die ondergeschikt was aan mijnheer Saito enzovoorts, met dien verstande dat de bevelen van hoog naar laag een paar hiërarchische treden konden overslaan.
Met andere woorden, in de firma Yumimoto was ik ondergeschikt aan iedereen.

Review:
Story:
Amélie had lived in Kansai until her 5th year, then she moved to China with her parents. Because of her memories she wanted to work for a Japanese company as a language interpreter. This book makes clear why you don't want to work in a Japanese office company without being attached to a company in your own country (though I think teaching is an exception (I've spoken with a lot of foreign English-language-teachers in Japan) and doing research at a university [I also spoke with someone who did that]). Amélie only gets to do jobs which are below her capabilities (copying documents, cleaning toilets) or which she just can't do (calculations) because she is not good with numbers. She got a contract for one year, so she stayed, and her descriptions of what she did were interesting to read.
I don't know what it is like in such companies now ("Yumimoto" is also not the real name of the company, it's a company which buys stuff and sells it again), but one thing she describes is changing/has changed by now (she was in Japan in 1990/1991). She wrote that girls aren't supposed to follow their dreams and should not expect to marry out of love, they should be married by the age of 25 and not expect to get a good job and they should be pretty but not be proud of it (etcetera). However, only one of my friends is already married (and she married out of love), my eldest host sister (who is 28) is going to marry this year, and my other host sister is only a bit younger and is not planning to marry anytime soon. So I think that things are changing in this generation.

Writing style:
Easily readable. I did like reading it and if I come across more books about Amélie's own life I'll read them, but not her "normal" books.

Rereadability:
No, it was interesting but not a book I'd read again. But as it's a BookCrossing book, it's supposed to travel on anyway :)

Supersnel uitgelezen, en me enorm mee vermaakt. Het deed me een beetje denken aan Josie Dew's "Een gajin op de fiets".
Ik heb weinig toe te voegen aan de boekberichten van zij die mij voor gingen, behalve dat het toch wel treurig is dat Oost en West zo enorm kunnen botsen!
