Journal Entry 1 by Danielle23 from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Saturday, March 12, 2011
Sam Spade is hired by the fragrant Miss Wonderly to track down her sister. When his partner, Miles Archer, is shot while on the trail, Spade finds himself both the hunter and the hunted: can he track down the jewel-encrusted bird before the Fat Man finds him? I read this book quite quickly and enjoyed the suspense it created. A great little story that tied itself up nicely.

Thank you Danielle for sending it. I'm looking forward to reading it. Finished it, and quite enjoyed it. It's not one of my favourite reads, but I liked it well enough. I liked how Sam Spade was a realistic person, he looked out for number one, himself and wasn't too overly moral, which often happens in crime novels.

I have no idea how many years it is since I saw the movie, but reading the book brought Sam Spade truly alive again in all his tough guy realism. I really enjoyed this 'old style' crime book, which for me oozed all the wonderful B&W drama of the cinema. The distance is probably a good thing as Hammett's Sam is totally distinct from Bogart which would usually bother me, but I think both do a good job in their own right.
