I think this author has now lost the plot and her books are getting silly. This book comprises a story within a story which link together at the end and the story within this story involves a case of abduction of toddler John Desser by three children who subsequently torture and murder the baby but for me it too closesly resembles the Jamie Bulger case. I didn't like this plot within a plot and thought it a totally unnecessary inclusion. The main story itself was also pretty daft and has Inspector Lynley back in the game again after his compassionate leave. There is also a growing attraction between him and his new acting Superintendant Isabelle Ardery who seems to be something of a tortured soul. The only character to salvage the interest was the irredeemable Sgt Barbara Havers! She is priceless!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Left down in the gaol, and slipped into a hole in the wall, above the grille to the oubliette. I hope the book will not be forgotten like the poor victims left to die in that terrible place in mediaeval times. It's a very creepy place.

This book was pretty good however the switching between the two major story lines was not done very well. It was a slog of a read but still I held on so there must of been something there to keep me going. However I loved finding a random book in a Castle. It took me a long time to read so being from Australia over here for a Europe trip it has seen many countries!
