"Georgie Sinclair's life is coming unstuck. Her husband's left her. Her son's obsessed with the End of the World. And now her elderly neighbour Mrs Shapiro has decided they are related. Or so the hospital informs her when Mrs Shapiro has an accident and names Georgie next of kin. This, however, is not a case of a quick ward visit: Mrs Shapiro has a large rickety house full of stinky cats that needs looking after that a pair of estate agents seem intent on swindling from her. Plus there are the 'Uselesses' trying to repair it (uselessly). Then there's the social worker who wants to put her in a nursing home. Not to mention some letters that point to a mysterious, painful past. As Georgie tries her best to put Mrs Shapiro's life back together somehow she must stop her own from falling apart..."

I've read the two previous books by Marina Lewycka, and actually enjoyed them more. This was an ok read, quite good but nothing special. One thing that bothered me, though: why is Georgie so certain that Mrs. Shapiro should not go to a nursing home when it's glaringly obvious from day one that she can't live alone anymore and needs help?!

The previous books by Marina Lewycka have not come my way, but this book came. So I'll start with this one. Thank you for the book, Silkki!

Time went by and did read A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian first and I listened to Marina Lewycka at a Book Fair and only then did I read this book - which I forgot to journal until now. I think Marina Lewycka writes like the storytellers told their stories before time of radios and televisions. Nothing great but likeable. I likes especially the fact that somebody speaks for the Palestinians.

Picked it up at the local meetup tonight. I have tried to read Lewycka's A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian but didn't manage to finish it. Let's see if I'll have better luck with this one.

I did manage to finish this one, though at first I wasn't so sure that would happen. At times this was an interesting and enjoyable reading, but at times it was also boring. Maybe she was trying to weave in too many big issues and she started to preach. There were a lot of characters some of which were really funny and lovable. But somehow they all remained a bit shallow, you really did not get a good view into what made them tick. I might give the Ukrainian tractors another shot, should I stumble upon it somewhere.
