Bought this as holiday reading in Germany. The book was ok, but I expected more. Especially the middle part that happened in India was sometimes really boring and at parts I really had to struggle to keep reading. Otherwise the book was fairly good, although nothing special. Don't know why it's become such a success.

Oh my gosh, an amazing surprise in the mail! I was having the most boring day of all times and Silkki, you managed to make it so much better, thank you so much! As long as I keep using make up and your significant other continues to paint, I'll know where to recycle my little brushes :)

I've been trying to finish this book for ages, but just like Silkki, I got so bored with the India part. Italy was an easy piece with all the author's quite chick-lit-like ponderings and wailings. Her stories on learning a language, making new friends and just eating were nice and entertaining, but as soon as the plane touched the Indian ground..I just couldn't help skipping many of the meditation parts altogether. Yes, I'm interested in philosophies behind religions and I do envy yogis for their flexibility, but the story felt more like a personal diary than a novel for anyone to read. If you're going to tell all about an ashram but not really reveal where you've been, don't bother. I could have easily read more about the people Gilbert met, but the endless pages on her guru and chants..not my cup of tea from the sacred bushes of higher consciousness, thank you very much. When the story moved to Bali, I was absolutely delighted! I loved the stories, loved the new tone in the text..but was yawning at the last pages again. I should have known that there wasn't going to be a clear ending to the book.
Don't know why the book has been such a massive success. Perhaps it has been just the fact that someone has had the guts to take a year off, travel and just enjoy themselves - probably all the readers are just being envious daydreamers?

Well, I've got Commitment on my bookshelf waiting its turn to be read and elianara kindly gave me the Eat, Pray, Love on dvd, so this journey isn't exactly over for me yet...
