3 out of 10

update 4/1/04

I tried reading this but just couldn't get passed the immature feel of the book. I usually like teen-lit but this one just bugged me. Especially the oral sex scene that REALLY bugged me. After that I just couldn't hack reading anymore. Too many other good books out there to spend time with.

BOOK DESCRIPTION: Pure is about fourteen - the age when you know everything, except when you don't know anything. It's about first love and the end of innocence, and realizing your family perhaps isn't as happy or your parents as together as you thought. It's about the cool friend for whom everything seems effortless, and the impossibly embarrassing friend you're nice to when your cool friends can't see. It's about that twenty-seven-year-old man who flirts with you when he sells your dad your overpriced birthday stereo - except he actually calls. And it's about what happens after.

I recieved this in the mail earlier today and since my laptop was being repaired by hubby, I went ahead and started reading. I was impressed to see that it was written by such a young woman after reading the back. It is pretty interesting. I don't know if it is the authors age or a feel she was intentionally going for, but so far it feels like I have gotten ahold of a teenagers diary because of the content, but the wording is better. Off to read more of the book.
Thanks for sending this my way. I have already PMed the next participant so I can get it underway ASAP after I finish reading it.

I was kind of into this book in the beginning. I felt like it was something most people could relate to, wanting to be popular in school, wishing to be cool or whatever. The whole feel of the book changed not too far in though. The narrator got kind of out there and her parents were making no sense. They seemed to care for her and about her and then suddenly, BAM!, they are allowing her to do things that concerned parents wouldn't let their 14 year old do. I couldn't relate to the narrator's wants, needs, or actions throughout the rest of the book, nor those of the parents. I have heard of people that do some of the things the narrator did, but never understood them.
I did find the British slang interesting. I have heard most of it before, but not all, and I enjoyed the perspective it helped convey in the book.
I will be sending this off to the next participant soon. Thanks for including me in this bookray.

Not the best book I've read, but not the worst either. Did feel very "fourteen-ish" but I assumed that was intentional, not just a product of the author's age. Candid and telling, and I think, at least for some of the population, quite accurate. In regards to the radical change of parent's behaviour (commented on above) I took it as an attitude change, at least in part, on the viewpoint of the narrator -- I know when I was 14 I had a VERY skewed outlook on things!

Didn't entirely understand the ending, but perhaps that was intentional.

Finished while at the 2006 NZ BookCrossing convention, but didn't realise I was last on the list! May wild release on my way back home, may figure something else out.... :-)
