New York Times Bestseller: Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sister were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas." She survived-and famously testified that her fifteen-tear old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, when the Kill Club, a secret society obsessed with notorious crimes, locates Libby and pumps her for details-proof its members hope may free Ben-she hatches a plan to profit off her tragic history. For a fee, she'll reconnect with the players from that night and report her finding to the club. As Libby's search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started-on the run from a killer.

This book was a very fascinating and very dark read and is not for the faint of heart or squeamish. It has a strong storyline and the characters were very well developed. So if you are looking for a book that is hard to put down, and a murder mystery, then this is the book for you.

This was an interesting book with lots of weird characters that enter the storyline along the way. The mystery or who murdered the Day family kept you guess right up till the end. Overall a good read.

Got elissamay's address and will mail this off to her shortly.

The book accompagnied me on my tour in Oman. I took great care of it and it's in big shape, don't worry.
It's my second book by Gillian Flynn after Sharp Objects and I definitely like her novels.

Humm I did not realize this was a novel I thought it was a graphic novel. I will start this as soon as I am feeling better for I can not concentrate on reading right now.

Journal Entry 13 by Esme-Weatherwax at Limerick, Co. Limerick Ireland on Thursday, June 7, 2012
At 1st I did not like the book at all. I found Libby to be a questionable person. However as I got into the book I enjoyed it more. Although I must say there is not one person in the story that was not morally questionable ( well maybe Diane) and everyone in the book seemed like they were unhappy (including Diane). I don't know why I enjoyed but I did and I would read another book of Flynn's. This book is not a happy tale and although there is some resolution in the end, I would not say it ended happy either.

* vedranaster is on holidays and asked me to hold the book until she comes back.

Journal Entry 15 by vedranaster at Zagreb, Zagreb City Croatia on Tuesday, November 20, 2012

The book arrived yesterday... Excellent timing, as I've just finished the ring book I had with me. Already started reading this one, so it shouldn't take long for it to travel on.

Thanks for sharing, ravencat!
And everyone else, for sending the book on. :)

Journal Entry 16 by vedranaster at Zagreb, Zagreb City Croatia on Sunday, November 25, 2012

I enjoyed Flynn's first book, Sharp Objects, and was looking forward to reading her second book, Dark Places. I was not disappointed. I liked this one even more. It also kept me turning pages and wanting to find out more, but it was less predictable than Sharp Objects. And while I cannot understand the actions of all the characters, that doesn't make them unrealistic; there are plenty of people in real life whose actions confound me. *grin*

Looking forward to reading more by this author.

I have lauraloo29's addy, so the book will travel on this week.

Finished this book this evening. It kept my interest and I found myself making time I don't normally on the weekend to finish it.

I felt the most for Libby and the life she was given. The ending and how everything was tied up was a surprise. For many of the characters I found myself shaking my head in disbelief (not that I didn't find them believable, but just so annoying sad).

Thank you for sharing. I will pop this book into the mail so it can return home.

I've never read 'Sharp Object' and probably won't, but if you're amongst the millions who've read 'Gone Girl,' you will know to expect unpleasant people and events, and sharp turns in the plot.

As Esme-Weatherwax says, everyone in the book is morally questionable except Diane, whose only mistake was inheriting and running a family farm in a bad economic time. Flynn really rings the bull's-eye with Runner Day, a lazy, selfish sleazeball. After the second reading, I realized that Flynn was an equal-opportunity author, creating a female character, Diondra, who was just as selfish and thoughtless.

So with no characters I liked, and a violent, sickening plot, can I find anything good to say about this book? I think it's a tribute to Flynn's writing that the characters, much against my will, held my interest. If the book we're reading is boring and mediocre, it's easy to toss it away and forget about it. My great dislike of the characters is the measure of Flynn's skill.

And - comparing this to 'Gone Girl' - which is more believable, the evil mastermind who arranges incriminating details months in advance, or a group of average people who stumble into tragedy, through incompetence or inability to foresee the consequences of their actions? Which do you see more of around you? I agree with lauraloo29: "(not that I didn't find them believable, but just so annoying sad)."
