Journal Entry 3 by chamonix44 at Almelo, Overijssel Netherlands on Monday, June 20, 2011

Whilst on holiday in Essex, I collected a box of World Book Night books from BookAmbler, that Ardachy had managed to collect for me. I am very grateful for this book and all the others. Thanks Ardachy! I did so want to be there on WBN itself, but this is my way of taking part in it, by reading and reviewing these books. I will read this one and then lend it out to members of my church congregation here in The Netherlands. Since this is a WBN book, I will copy and paste the WBN information here, in the following notes, including the logo. Amazon Editorial Review Ex-MP Jack Reacher goes into action to find his brother's killers, after a series of brutal crimes terrorizes tiny Margrave, Georgia, only to uncover the dark and deadly conspiracy concealed behind the town's peaceful facade. A first novel.

Journal Entry 7 by chamonix44 at Almelo, Overijssel Netherlands on Saturday, July 30, 2011

I finished reading this book last night.....all 525 pages of it. It seemed to take forever to get through it, although I only started it on Thursday and finished it on Friday. I guess there was just such a lot packed into it and I thought it was never coming to an end. Now what did I think of it? It was an easy reader, despite what I said, and the text is a good size for times when there isn't so much reading light. Far too many horrific murders, some described in too much detail. Very bloody in places! I didn't like all the violence, especially when I was home alone at night reading it! It reminded me of the sort of American detective series that I have sometimes seen on TV here in The Netherlands, late at night. All murders and violence, no real life going on. Or is this real life in America? I don't think so, well not to that degree! I didn't even like the main character, Jack Reacher. He committed most of the murders anyway! Can people really commit multi murders and get away with it just because they have some connection with the police? Jack Reacher just carried on with his travels at the end of this book. No mention of any inquiries, police interviews, court etc. Just bye bye Jack.....enjoy your travels! Now you will be surprised when I add that I quite enjoyed reading this novel, (apart from the violence), as I was always wondering what?, who?, why? etc. One more thing....do Americans like Jack Reacher really pay for a motel room at night just to use the telephone, and not sleep there, but just leave after a couple of hours? Also do people like Jack always buy new clothes and throw the dirty ones into a trash bin? I am glad that I read this book and was able to take part in its reading history as part of the World Book Night. So I thank Ardachy for that. At least I can now also say that I have read a Lee Child book. I have certainly read books from a lot of very different authors with WBN, and I am really grateful for it. Will I read a Lee Child book again? I don't think so.....UNLESS....it is one of the books chosen for a future World Book Night!! Just to end this review I will quote what it says inside this WBN book about Lee Child. "Lee Child is one of the world's leading thriller writers. His novels consistently achieve the number one slot in hardback and paperback on bestsellers lists on both sides of the Atlantic, and are translated into over forty languages. Born in Coventry, he now lives in America. Visit www.jackreacher.co.uk..." So it seems I might be in the minority, with not liking so much violence in books. Or could this novel of his be a one-off with so much violence? I guess I'm not about to find out any time soon!! I will now try to lend this book out to members of my church congregation and ladies' clubs that I belong to. I will be extremely interested in any future reviews of it. Now forward and onward to another WBN book. Which one will I choose? It's hard to believe that I have already read 20 of the WBN books in the last four months. Only four left to read, (here in my WBN box I mean), although I still don't have "Cloud Atlas"! If I manage to get that one, then that will complete the magic 25!! UPDATE : A kind bookcrosser from Ely in Cambridgeshire, sent me a copy of Cloud Atlas a month ago, and I can happily report that I have now read all 25 WBN books!

Journal Entry 9 by BlairACharles at Zutphen, Gelderland Netherlands on Wednesday, December 14, 2011
A truly memorable book and a very accurate honest one. There is violence in this book, a lot of it but it is not gratuitous. The books hero, Jack Reacher, is a disillusioned former Military Police Major who has been made redundant due to cut backs. Wandering into a strange town one day the nightmare begins as the immoral powerful villains try to make him a fall guy to cover what they are doing. He fights back, hard and savagely using all the skills acquired during his MP career. The violence is savage, graphic and honest. People who are hit or shot are really hurt. This is the reality of violence, it is ugly and painful. Jack fights back with great skill and cunning, overcoming a series of savage attacks as the story unfolds into a nail biting, and clever, conclusion. I have gone out and bought two more Lee Child, Jack Reacher books for Christmas.

Journal Entry 10 by chamonix44 at Almelo, Overijssel Netherlands on Saturday, January 14, 2012

I received this book back from Blair last Sunday. Sorry it has been a week and I have only just made this journal entry! The book will now go back into my WBN book box! I am so glad that a World Book Night book introduced Blair to an author that he might otherwise not have looked twice at, like it did for me with a couple of other authors! I'm certainly looking forward to the 2012 WBN even if I won't be there in the UK to join in the fun, but I'm hoping my BookCrossing friends will save books for me once more! (Hint! Hint! to ardachy!!)
