From Amazon:

Lisa Shilling is 16, smart, attractive - and she is losing her mind. Some days are "light," and everything is normal; during her "dark" days, she hides deep within herself, and nothing can reach her. Her teachers ignore what is happening. Her parents deny it. Lisa's friends are the only ones who are listening - and they walk with her where adults fear to tread. This classic novel of a teenager's descent into madness, in the tradition of Go Ask Alice and I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, has remained a best seller for close to thirty years.
I'm sorry, but I just don't see it! The above review pretty much covers the entire content of the book... it didn't get much deeper than that. Maybe I'm trying to find something adult in a book written for young adults... or maybe it's because the book is fairly dated... but I just didn't feel as though I learned anything or gained any insight into mental illness through this book. Disappointing.

10 out of 10

I found Lisa, bright and dark on a bench in the Main Library Courtyard in Victoria, B.C. I was delighted with the invite to have a look at the book and actually, I felt it was somehow meant for me. And it was. I took it home and read it in two sittings as I found it rather compelling and couldn't put it down. I was really moved by the story and especially about the valiant efforts of Lisa's friends who rose so courageously to the challenge of helping her. And especially how they were so willing and able to endure the hard times they experienced in so doing. And how they continued to love their friend. The book really hit home for me in light of all the pop psychology these days that labels friends and loved ones "co-dependents" when they try and offer some help to those dear to them who suffer from difficulties similar to Lisa's. I'm one of those people and not only was I rewarded with the story about Lisa, but my dear friend thanked me last night for being the only one who really want to help him kick an unwanted addiction. So I feel really blessed.
