True story about a woman's unusual upbringing. It was meant to be very funny, but as you read the story, you realize it isn't as funny. More along the lines of a "fish out of water" memoir, and how someone was able to finally fit in.
Let my sister borrow it, and forgot to release it.
Borrowed from my sister.
returned to me from my sister, will be loaning it to a friend, then it will need to travel.
Some funny moments, many uncomfortable moments...definitely compelled me to keep reading to see what happened to the unfortunate girl next. I always enjoy a good class/socioeconomic divide story. You never know what someone has gone through!
Returned from a friend. Will be putting it in a "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" bookbox when it is my turn. Wonder where it will end up? BTW, this book was bought in a bookstore in Chicago, it is already has had a good journey.
Last of 3 sent to copchic905 as a trade. Thanks for trading with me!
Received book today.....thank you for the trade!
Added to Nattabee's "Can't Wait To Get On The Road Again" bookbox :)
Taking out of Nattabee's "Can't Wait to Get on the Road Again" large bookbox.
When I saw the cover picture, I knew that this book would be staying with me! It looks like a funny, weird memoir. I really love those.

My Review: This was a very darkly humorous memoir. Mishna is a white girl living in a predominantly black neighborhood. She goes to school with wealthy, smart, mostly white people. Her school lunch is the best meal of her day, but she has to act like it's awful because the other girls at school think it's gross. She's too white for the neighborhood and too poor for her school. She seems to be fortunate because she wants a better life than her dad, who rarely works, or her mom who is a school bus driver. Her dad questions her a lot "Why do you want to go to college?" He seems to think she is a snob for wanting a better life than her dad's. In the end, I think it's her attitude to make her way no matter what that helped her make a good life for herself.
Putting into my bookbox: Virtual Biography/Auto-Biography/Humor Bookbox, for Round #4.
Sending to Firegirl from the Virtual Biography/Auto-Biography/Humor Bookbox Enjoy the books!
Arrived safely. Thanks much!
While at times hilarious, most of this was flinchingly disturbing. Wolff had a bizarre childhood, as a very white girl being raised by a white man who lived and acted and tried to raise his daughter "black". Wolff struggles to fit in, but is clearly uncomfortable being pushed to try and be someone she isn't. I found her father's behavior bizarre and, at times, very cruel. It would be interesting to hear his side of this story. I quite enjoyed this; definitely different from any other memoir I've read before.
