Rosa - wild, impulsive girlfriend of accomplished magician Fletcher Brandon (known to his friends as Red) - has performed the ultimate Find the Lady act. She has run away and been found dead on the railway line between Oxford and Reading.
Red is grief-stricken and completely baffled: as far as he knew, Rosa was safely at work at the time. When her personal effects are posted to him anonymously, Red's suspicions are thoroughly aroused.
