A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
9 journalers for this copy...

I just finished the book this evening. This was one of those classics I've wanted to read ever since I read Huckleberry Finn in high school. I really enjoyed it; I had forgotten how good a storyteller Mark Twain was. One of the things I liked best about this book was the two sides to it: one, an entertaining story about a man who mysteriously ends up 13 centuries in the past, and two, a criticism on the whole ideal of "progress" that engulfed the US in the later nineteenth century.
A very interesting book.
Thanks bilbi, for sharing it with me!
Mailing to vicki9170 in Florida on Saturday, 1-3-04. Enjoy!

Oh dear, these are the things that can happen... Just found the book in my letterbox all wet! I'll let it dry first and then start reading.
This book truly needs a new journal entry because bookcrossers taking part in this bookring should be aware that this book is CURSED ! And my 'ring is a MESS !
1. vicki9170 turns my 'ring into a 'ray
2. I will be needed someone to ship the book from Europe to the USA for BigJohnLefty to read it
3. The book took a bath !!!!
Well ! I shouldn't have said that this book is for me a satire of the industrialized America that is almighty and can beat Merlin at his own magical game and bring progress to the dull England ;-)

Book is dry now. Looks like a softly rolling countryside. I've put the book under some heavy books, maybe it will flatten a bit and maybe the curse will get crushed.
Read a couple of pages, liked it and decided to look for a second-hand copy of it to read at a slower pace and in my own time.
And off we go for the curse... again :D
4. Olifant likes the book but won't read my copy ;-)
Sorry to intervene but it is curse I'm dealing with !!!
bilbi who should stop watching horror films on TV :D

Curse is off to... eh... I mean book is off to Suzy26. Good luck!
Received this book in the mail today. Thanks Olifant for sending it to me. I look forward to reading it, but it may take a while as I am inundated by ringbooks at the moment.
I know that A Connecticut Yankee is one of the classics of American literature, but I am afraid it couldnot quite captivate me. Maybe I just love the King Arthur stories too much. I didnot appreciate Merlin being depicted as an old fool. Or perhaps it was just me, not getting the humor...
This book will be sent on its way to the next in line, BigJohnLefty, as soon as I have the address.

Book was sent to BigJohnLefty today.
Received as part of bookring from suzy26 in Holland. Plan to get started on this right away.
Wow! Although it took me forever to get through it, this book blew my mind. It is the first book I ever had to look up cliffnotes (or other criticism/analysis) for while reading, just to get a better understanding of it. Twain satirizes government and religion, taking particular stabs at the Catholic church and "divine right of kings", as well as makes a lot of commentary on what he perceives to be human nature. Someone unfamiliar with his other works might find it hard to believe that this is the same man that wrote "Tom Sawyer" - although having re-read that one recently I recognize the style myself.
In addition to being an early version of what might be called "science fiction/fantasy", the book also has a lot of echoes of "Don Quixote" (which the author had to have been familiar with).
