Journal Entry 1 by karendawn from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Tuesday, September 02, 2003
Yes, this book at times gave way to the melodramatic and was sometimes a bit unbelievable in its coincidences, but isn't that what it was supposed to have done? A book that left me happy and smiling and chuckling at the adventures of the dear ole madcap - Capitola! I need a different edition for class, so this is now an extra copy.

Journal Entry 4 by Silverstone from Göteborg, Västergötland Sweden on Thursday, October 16, 2003
I really enjoyed this old novel! As a fan of Jane Austen I must say that Southworth is in her class but different. (Same, same, but different - an advert here in Sweden). This is though taking place in America not in England. Our young heroine, Capitola Black, not only finds her self in danger and adventure, she often seeks them up too. Down below comes a bit of a spoiler, so I'm going to switch the font colour to white - that way people new to this BCID won't see it unless they right-click and drag over it (highlight it, and it appears, voila!), whereas people who have already made journal entries will get this all e-mailed to 'em. (Thanks to ottawabill from whom I copied this, I hope that was okay..) It is very much of a tall tale about this novel, everything goes wrong, Capitola always outwits the villains in the end, and of course the happy ending.... But this is also why this novel is so enjoying, these kind of stories should have happy endings. Also there is a moral touch which is so common in stories from the 19th century and a kind of simplicity despite all the twists and turns the story takes. I'm very fond of this kind of books, and do recommend it!
