A nice read. I consider it to be rather flaky because it didn't get very complex and the historical aspect of the book wasn't really explored. However, perhaps the author was trying to capture a maid's interpretation of the world. Griet is the daughter of a man who has recently been in an accident that will not allow him to work. The only solution is to put her to work, as the oldest child at home. She works for Vermeer, an artist, and she is to clean his workshop. However, a certain appreciation of each other develops between the artist and Griet. I think what bothered me about this book is that it's just not realistic. The kind of feelings that are hinted at just don't seem possible for either character.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a neat story and as an art historian I found the descriptions of the way the paintings came to be quite interesting.
