This is a short easy to read book that is a monologue by the main protagonist relating his experiences in New York and Pakistan prior to and after the events of September 11th 2001. The central character is a young Princeton graduate who gains a place in a New York finance firm as an analyst who assesses the fundamental value of a company on behalf of clients interested in some sort of commercial transaction. He becomes disillusioned after September 11th as he views the response of the US, the suspicions of its people towards him and its values against a backdrop of his upbringing in Pakistan. He also becomes disillsioned by his girlfriend's inability to overcome the loss of a former lover. The book is short, but never really develops any depth of analysis of his inner struggle and therefore treats difficult issues rather simplistically. On the positive side the writing is succinct but effective. The subplot concerning his girlfriend obviously affects his mind set, but seems rather irrelevant to the political themes. This seems rather contrived to add weight to his disillusion. The ending is rather a let down. The narration seems to be building up to an explosive finale, which turns out unfortunately to be a very damp squib.

Thank you flambard for this surprise book! I have to say I have read this already :(, but I'm sure I will find someone who will be happy to read it; I probably will pass it on to my sister who is on bookcrossing too. I find your World book night such a fabolous idea and I'm quite jalous about it, it would be lovely to have an equivalent of it around here. And even better with the books registered on bookcrossing! Anyway it is great to have an actual world book night book in my hands and I will ensure that it will travel further. :)

touching book! I liked the monologue style throughout the book and the "inside" point of view . I can warmly recommend it!
