Dear Reader

Welcome to BookCrossing and thanks for being a part of World Book Night 2011, the largest book giveaway in history. 1,000,000 specially printed copies of 25 different books changed hands on March 5th 2011 and began their journey from reader to reader. This book is one of them. World Book Night has joined with BookCrossing to help track these books as they travel. You can be a part of that journey by making a comment in the book's journal here on BookCrossing. Your journal entry can say how you got the book, what you thought of it, your plans for it or whatever else you might like to add.

On BookCrossing you may choose to remain anonymous or join (it's free). If you join, you’ll be alerted by e-mail each time someone makes another journal entry for this specific copy of this book (other copies of the book are travelling with their own ID number. Every copy of every book has a unique ID). It’s all confidential (you’re known only by your screen name and no one is ever given your e-mail address) and spam-free.

Thursday 10th March 2011: A dark, dull and dreary day that made me feel a bit depressed.....until....the postman turned up with this package! Wow! A World Book Night copy....my first! Thank you so much kinedi for your amazing generosity at sending out copies of this book to those who really wanted to take part in WBN, but couldn't! I will get around to reading this book as soon as I can.
I'm sitting here typing this with wet legs at the moment, because my cat just scratched at the back door to be let inside as it is now pouring with rain outside. The first thing she did was to rub herself against my legs and then shake off all the rain on me, just like a dog does.....so reminding me that I should be feeling depressed, and not sitting here with a big smile on my face! I am so pleased to have this book. Thank you very much for sending a copy to me. It is much appreciated.

It says inside the back cover that I should register this copy on the WBN site. I will try to do that later.

Tuesday 15th March 2011. It is 6.15 am! Yes, I am up early this morning. I woke up an hour ago and I came downstairs for a drink. Then other things distracted me like feeding the cat, putting the dishwasher on, and now I have just put the washing machine on too! So I thought I might as well come online and pop in here to say that I am going to start reading this book today. My husband has booked a day off work so that he can fill out his tax forms. They have to be in by 1st April, so he will be needing some peace and quiet to get those done. The perfect excuse for me to start reading this book!By the way, I haven't even tried to get on that WBN website yet, after I read in the BC forums that people were having difficulties with it. I haven't been brave enough to try it, but I will do soon!

"...She listened to me speak with a series of smiles, as though she were sipping at my descriptions and finding them to her taste....."

Now I understand what others have meant when they describe this as a thought provoking tale. Although I cannot be sure if my own interpretation of this story provoked in me the same thoughts that it provoked in others, but here is my review for what it's worth.
I did enjoy reading the story of Changez, a Pakistani who tells of his life in the United States before and after the attack on 11th September.
His sympathies seemed to lie with the attackers, and his thoughts about America changed after the attack and he started to think of America as a country that interfered and bullied other countries.
I felt compassion for both him and Erica. I'm not sure why Erica was in this story at all, unless she was there to portray the small part of America that he liked and had sympathy with.
As the story went on his feelings became more and more confused, and so did I, in parts. You could say that the book leaves you guessing as to the ending. I am really glad that I had a chance to read this.

I have 'caught' this book myself as Sheila doesn't want to make a journal entry. She asked me to do it for her.
Sheila finished reading this book. She gave it back to me. I asked her to send me an email telling me what she thought of the book, after she has had time at home to think about what to write.

10th May: UPDATE:
I just received Sheila's email. Here is what she says:

"Here is my review of The Reluctant Fundamentalist
It is not the sort of book I usually read but I found it intriguing and well written. As I got deeper into the book I wanted to learn more and more about this (well behaved) character.
I will give it an 8 "

I delivered this book to my friend, Lies, this morning as she was on her way for a short break to Düsseldorf in Germany. She will read it and give it back to me on her return. I am not expecting a journal entry from Lies, but I will ask her what she thought of the book afterwards and I will write it here. (For the English journallers reading this, LIES is pronounced like LEECE!!!)
Message for Lies:
Just in case you do get to read this Lies, and in case you can manage a journal entry....I hope you enjoy the book...and don't worry about writing a long journal entry, just one sentence will do!!
I wish you a pleasant break in Germany, with some good reading!

My friend, Lies, gave this book back to me today. She has asked me to write this review for her:

Review From Lies:
I enjoyed this book very much. It makes you think about all the real-life Pakistani's who were perhaps educated in, and living in America before 9/11. Then after 9/11 where would their loyalties lie? With America and their colleagues and friends, or with their families back home in Pakistani?? Americans started to look at people from the Middle East in a different way after 9/11, and the character in the book noticed this and started to look at America in a different way! Well I'm not sure what to make of the ending. It leaves you to think what probably happened! Good book. Thank you for sharing!

After our Anglican church service today, in our coffee 'hut', I had my box of World Book Night books on a bench in case anyone wanted to borrow one. Blair decided that he would like to read this one. Blair has already joined bookcrossing.
So this book is now with BlairACharles.
I hope you enjoy it Blair.

Nicole persuaded me to read this book and I am glad that she did now. The story is narrated by the main character, Changez, a Pakistani from a genteel old aristocratic Pakistani family. The story is about a young Muslim working hard and following a dream to study and work in America. On graduating he gets a dream job, travels in Europe meets a fabulous young woman, a member of one of the American elite families. The woman, Erica, has problems, serious emotional problems. Tied into this, Changez has difficulties fitting in with his colleagues. Following the twin tower attacks, he struggles even more and the dream appears to die. The ending is not predictable, to a certain extent it is up to the reader to decide how it ends! As someone who has lived as a foreigner in various countries, including Muslim countries, most of my life, I found that I could identify with Changez in so many ways. If you want some insight into other cultures, a good read and a perplexing ending then I can recommend Mahsin Hamid's book, 'Reluctant Fundamentalist.

I received this book back from Blair one week ago, after our Anglican Church Service in Goor. Sorry that it has taken me so long to write this journal entry. I am glad that Blair enjoyed this book. I will now be putting it back into my WBN book box so that someone else might choose it to read. I did end up with two copies of this title in my WBN book box, but now this will be the only copy in there as I sent the other book off to a BookCrosser in Newcastle as a RABCK.

Journal Entry 19 by wingAnonymousFinderwing at Bad Bentheim, Niedersachsen Germany on Tuesday, August 7, 2012
A good book. Changez, a Pakistani from a good family, was studying and working in America, and he seemed quite satisfied with his life there. But then after the attacks on the Twin Towers he changed and started to rethink his life there and to think differently about America and Americans on the whole. He gradually changed his views and by the end of the book we were wondering if he was supporting the attackers. Anyway the ending was quite shocking to me and it was disappointing that we were left top guess exactly what happened to him.

Journal Entry 20 by chamonix44 at Almelo, Overijssel Netherlands on Tuesday, August 7, 2012
I received this book today, and it is now back in my 2011 World Book Night Book Box. However, I will be retiring this 2011 box for a while as I want to promote the books in my 2012 WBN book box. I do not have all the titles yet, but I do have quite a few of them. The others are proving very difficult to get hold of. So, until all my 2012 books are out with new readers, this book will be having a rest!
