This book kicked open the door to the wider world of literature for me. After reading The Moon and Sixpence I demanded a lot more out of the books I read.

Somebody brought this paperback into my second-hand bookshop (BMV Books, Yonge and Eglinton, Toronto) and sold it to me for 50 cents. After looking at the other guy's journal entries, I wonder, where the hell has this book been for (exactly) the last year, in somebody's backpack?!?! Tomorrow, I will drop the book on a bench at the Yonge and Eglinton subway station around 11:00 a.m. or so (hey, DOGSPAWN) and we'll see where it goes from there!!!!

POSTSCRIPT - (For the sole benefit of DOGSPAWN) On the way to the subway station Wednesday morning, before I could drop off the book on a bench at Yonge and Eglinton, I had a doctor's appointment, and ended up giving the book to my doctor when she mentioned having read a few other books by Somerset Maugham. As for the dude who sold it to me, I can't remember a thing about him, except that he had about a dozen books all told, other classic lit, so it probably wasn't just something he picked up because it was lying around on a bench a year ago for free...

I enjoyed "The Moon and Sixpence" very much. I have been reading a lot of contemporary novels, so it was very interesting to read a "classic". It took me a long time to get around to it after it was given me, as I had a couple of other books to read for book clubs. I had read OF Human Bondage & Cakes and Ale about 20 years ago and this lived up to my expectations.
I am leaving on a brief trip to Florida and plan to leave the book with someone there.
