Read and release!
Whilst on a recent visit to the UK, I was delighted to find this World Book Night copy in the "Community Bookshop" charity shop in Chelmsford, for only 75p!! It looks brand new and unread. There are no creses whatsoever in the spine and the pages are completely flat, clean and new. So I bought it and I intend to read it and then hopefully to lend it out to others so that they can enjoy it too!
Amazon Editorial Review
Christopher is 15 and lives in Swindon with his father. He has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. He is obsessed with maths, science and Sherlock Holmes but finds it hard to understand other people. When he discovers a dead dog on a neighbour's lawn he decides to solve the mystery and write a detective thriller about it. As in all good detective stories, however, the more he unearths, the deeper the mystery gets - for both Christopher and the rest of his family.

A strange story indeed, which gives an insight to the mind of a child with Asperger's syndrome. You get some idea on how it felt for Christopher, not to be able to read what the expressions on people's faces meant, to be scared by certain colours, not to be able to eat food that touches other food on his plate, to not being able to cope with certain levels of noise and to not being able to stand being touched by anyone, including his parents, without reacting violently towards the person touching him.
He is a very intelligent boy with a special talent for understanding maths, and, although he goes to a special school, he is able to take a maths 'A' Level exam early, and passes with an 'A' grade.
The story starts off with Christopher finding his neighbour's dog lying dead on the lawn with a garden fork right through him. There is a drawing on the front cover of this copy with the poor dog lying there pierced by the garden fork. Towards the end of the book, when the dog's killer is known, (I won't tell you who it is or I'll spoil the story for you), it says that the police don't arrest people for little crimes unless you ask them to, and Christopher's mother said that killing a dog was only a little crime!! Well of course, I do not agree with that, and I don't think many animal lovers would agree either!
All in all, an easy read, and interesting. Some parts funny, some parts extremely sad.
I'm really glad that I had the chance to read this book and to also be a part of this WBN book's history! I will be lending this book out to others. So I will be taking it to church with me on Sunday.

I'm having a get-together with expat friends, and lots of them want to read some WBN books. This book is going home with Jenny. I will stand over her and make her write a journal entry, or otherwise we might not get one!
Looking forward to reading this. From Jenny
This was quite a moving book, for me anyway. Christopher was certainly special with his great talent for maths, but he couldn't understand the expressions on people's faces and what they meant. He had many other problems that most 'normal' people could not understand or have patience with. Sad story in a way, but interesting.
I received this book today, and it is now back in my 2011 World Book Night Book Box. However, I will be retiring this 2011 box for a while as I want to promote the books in my 2012 WBN book box. I do not have all the titles yet, but I do have quite a few of them. The others are proving very difficult to get hold of. So, until all my 2012 books are out with new readers, this book will be having a rest!
Time to move this book on.
