I guess I just don't like his style, maybe it is just me? This was just a bit too graphic for me...

Received it today in the mail, thank you very much, Josephine!!!

Update:
The book was not like I expected it to be, the only other Paulo Coelho novel that I've read was The Alchimist, which is really different. I was surprised about the detailed description of her adventures as a prostitute, but then I found out that it is a book about love and not only about sex. But then again, I don't think I would re-read that book... Maybe I will try another one of Coelho's novels though. I've heard good things about "The devil and Miss Prym"!

Oh heavens above!! This book arrived on my doorstep this morning (thanks allbookedup!) ... Unfortunately it's the 3rd book in 2 days I've received, so there are a few books ahead of it in the TBR list. I'll get to it as quickly as I can ... promise!

:-)

What a lovely book!

This is the second book about prostitution I've read this year. The first (Michael Faber's "The Crimson Petal and the White" set in the 1600s) was much grittier, with a lead character that felt sorry for herself and the situation she was in. I was a bit wary about reading a second book on the subject so soon after the first, but needn't have worried.

As always with Coelho's books there is a lovely sense of "time" in his novels. I never feel rushed reading one of his books, nor bored. His characters are wonderful and he dips in and out of just the right amount of detail to keep his readers interested. Maria, the lead character in "Eleven Minutes" is very matter-of-fact about her life as a prostitute. She does not seem to feel hard-done-by nor embittered by how she ended up in the world's oldest profession. Nor does she revel in or enjoy her new life. She deals with it and focusses on her own end goal.

By the end I felt it was a good novel on choices and how you can control what happens in your life. It's not just about sex and prostitution, but also a wonderful love story about what true love can bring to a person. And I loved the ending!!

I'll send this on to ArnpriorHSP as soon as I get a mailing address; but this gets a big thumbs up from me!

I enjoyed this...but it's hard to explain. It certainly wasn't as I expected it to be. But I've found myself pondering some of the journal entries and the character's insights even after I finished the book yesterday.

She's stuck in my head. Rare that a book will do that!

I'll pass it on once I get the address for the next person on the list.

Journal Entry 11 by lostbookisland on Sunday, June 3, 2007
This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.

All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.

It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
