6 out of 10

I've had this book for a while now and am still reading it - just over half-way through. Wasn't sure what I thought of it at first, but am really enjoying it now. The 6 rating reflects my earlier doubts - I will rate it higher when I finish it and journal it again.

Well! I'd be tempted to say of Jasper Fforde "Whatever was he ON when he wrote this book?!" but I wouldn't like, for a moment, to imply that I thought he might have been following in the footsteps of Coleridge et al.

Admittedly, it took me a couple of chapters to "get into" it, but then I got really intrigued and there were many times when I laughed aloud - very rarely does a book do that for me.

If "conventional" does it for you, you won't like this book. But I loved it. I would just say that I think it's advisable to have read Jane Eyre before reading this, otherwise you won't get the full benefit of the humour.

First of all, many thousand apologies at not getting the book in the mail by now! What with the kids' winter vacation & everybody being sick I've been terribly swamped. I'm just getting back into the swing of things, though with a very tight budget at the moment. Should be able to mail the book out on the 20th, though.

I found *The Eyre Affair* to be delightful and amusing, a welcome bit of fun amidst the wiping of drippy noses and trying to cope with our housebound kids the last few weeks! Every element of the book pleased, right down to the naming of the characters which was often quite tongue in cheek.

The one disappointment I had with this book was the all too neat ending (I won't give anything more away, for the benefit of those who are waiting to read it.) But definitely for a first published book, this was a good piece of work. I look forward to reading more books by Mr. Fforde as he hones his talents and develops a stronger relationship with his editors.

Just got this in the mail and am looking forward to reading it.

Update (April 22 '04): I've had this book way too long and I'm so sorry. I've tried to start it a few times, but just can't get into it. JesseBC and Amynsperry have both asked to be skipped, so I've just PM'd Busybooklover and will mail it out as soon as I get an address to send it too.

I am having the worst time getting this book on its way! Busybooklover has asked to be skipped in this ring too. I've had 3 strikes in a row, but I won't get discouraged. I'll keep on going down the list until I find someone who will let me mail this book to them!

PM on the way to Bittermint...

UPDATE (April 27, 2004): I'm happy to report that this little book is now on the way to Bittermint! YAY!

I finished reading The Eyre Affair a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I found it slow going in the the beginning but am so glad I stuck with the book, for the last hundred pages I couldn't put it down. It's been a long time since I read Jane Eyre, but I think a basic working knowledge of that book definitely helps. I got a giggle over the conclusion to the Shakespeare discussion. The Eyre Affair is both wacky and suspenseful. I'll be mailing this book to Dakitraka.
