For a first novel, this is an amazing effort. A really well researched quasi-historical novel which recalls the golden era of conjuring magic and illusion. I found it quite slow at first, but the last quarter of the book really picks up in terms of pace and humour. It's got a bit of something for everyone, detective novel, romance, technological development, conspiracy, the odd bit of theatrical gore - well worth a read. My favourite part of the whole book is actually Gold's dedication to his wife right at the end of the book..> 'Friend, sister, secret weapon, paramour. Wife! I love you - let's take over this evil planet and make it our playground' Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sending to BreakEveryRule - a new BookCrosser in Manchester to read and release!

Book received by post from BookXer BreakEveryRule. I shall take it to Spain for a short break (together with my wife) but I'm a slow reader, so don't hold your breath. I shall then seek out a suitable dropping off place where it will be set free again. Looking forward to an intriguing read. Thanks to Yoko and Break for the opportunity. Matabele
