In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys - best friends - are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen, after that 1953 foul ball, is extraordinary and terrifying.

Well, it took me long enough to get to it, but I finally did. As I am not a big Irving fan (didn't much care for The Cider House Rules and The World According to Garp), I was not expecting to like this one so much. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought Owen was hysterical and I am still laughing about the armadillo in grandfather's closet and the incident with the VW. The only drawback to the whole book is the commentary on Reaganomics. I realize that it was Irving's way of stating his politics, but it added virtually nothing to the book.

Thanks for sharing. I will make sure it gets a good home next.

Thank you BellaMack! This has arrived with friends in a book bag. I do like how well bookcrossed labled it is.

John Irving is also one of my all time favourites! I have read so much of his work and this is one of the few that I haven't read yet.
Also this book is on the 1001 books you must read before you die list. I'm currently obsessing about the list and enjoying the vast majority of what I'm reading, so this is another one I'm looking forward to reading.
On to the queue with you ;-)
