Dear Reader

Welcome to BookCrossing and thanks for being a part of World Book Night 2011, the largest book giveaway in history. 1,000,000 specially printed copies of 25 different books changed hands on March 5th 2011 and began their journey from reader to reader. This book is one of them. World Book Night has joined with BookCrossing to help track these books as they travel. You can be a part of that journey by making a comment in the book's journal here on BookCrossing. Your journal entry can say how you got the book, what you thought of it, your plans for it or whatever else you might like to add.

On BookCrossing you may choose to remain anonymous or join (it's free). If you join, you’ll be alerted by e-mail each time someone makes another journal entry for this specific copy of this book (other copies of the book are travelling with their own ID number. Every copy of every book has a unique ID). It’s all confidential (you’re known only by your screen name and no one is ever given your e-mail address) and spam-free.

Thanks Ardachy for yet another great World Book Night title. I am very grateful for all the copies you managed to pick up for me on WBN itself!
I intend to read this, journal it, and then lend it out to members of my local church congregation.

Amazon Review:
Divided into three parts, the tale is narrated by two orphaned girls whose lives are inextricably linked. It begins in a grimy thieves kitchen in Borough, South London with 17-year-old orphan Susan Trinder. She has been raised by Mrs Sucksby, a cockney Ma Baker, in a household of fingersmiths (pickpockets), coiners and burglars. One evening Richard "Gentleman" Rivers, a handsome confidence man, arrives. He has an elaborate scheme to defraud Maud Lilly, a wealthy heiress. If Sue will help him she'll get a share of the "shine". Duly installed in the Lillys' country house as Maud's maid, Sue finds that her mistress is virtually a prisoner. Maud's eccentric Uncle Christopher, an obsessive collector of erotica (loosely modelled on Henry Spenser Ashbee) controls every aspect of her life. Slowly a curious intimacy develops between the two girls and as Gentleman's plans take shape, Sue begins to have doubts. The scheme is finally hatched but as Maud commences her narrative it suddenly becomes more than a tad difficult to tell quite who has double-crossed who. Waters' penchant for Byzantine plotting can get a bit exhausting but even at its densest moments--and remember this is smoggy London circa 1862--it remains mesmerising. A damning critique of Victorian moral and sexual hypocrisy, a gripping melodrama and a love story to boot, this book ingeniously reworks some truly classic themes.--Travis Elborough --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I just finished this book! What a great story. I loved it and found it hard to put down. It certainly had twists in this story that I wasn't expecting! I felt satisfied with the ending.

Now I have read 24 of the 25 World Book Night books. I am just waiting to receive Cloud Atlas to complete the set!

This book will now go into my WBN book box, to be lent out to members of our Anglican church congregation!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

At our expat meet-up yesterday, I managed to persuade almost everyone to take at least one WBN book home with them. They all appeared to be starved of English books here in The Netherlands! I made most of the release notes yesterday, but there were too many to make and I was tired, as I was also helping each person to make a short JE to say they had the book.
Anyway, some did not get done. I left only Almelo people until today. So I will make the last release notes now, and the "catch" notes will also be done today, as all the Almelo expats are meeting here later for coffee!
Phew! I feel like I have accomplished something great, with last year's WBN books, just before this year's books are distributed!

This book went home with Celeste, from Schelfhorst, Almelo.
Enjoy!!

I'm Celeste, friend of Nicole. I was excited to see the big book box full of English books, but they disappeared out of the box so fast. Everyone at our eat-in meet, wanted one. Only this one left after I got there, but Nicole said it was her favourite book out of the lot!!! So maybe I'm lucky.
Took it home last night, but too tired to read. Tonight maybe!
Thanks Nicole for helping me leave this message. The site looks complicated!

Loved it!!! One of the best books I have read in a few years. Took ages to get through it because I haven't had much reading time, but it was well worth it. At first I felt sorry for Maud, and then I felt sorry for Sue. Lots of excitement in this story!
Book is being returned. I hope I can borrow another one!

Thank you to my friend, Celeste, for returning this book. She really enjoyed it and I was able to help her make a journal entry! Great.
I also have more good news.....this book is going with me tonight to The International Ladies' Club where Susan, from South Africa, would love to read it next, (on my recommendation!) As for Celeste.....well she is borrowing another WBN book which I have just had returned to me!

I really enjoyed “Fingersmith” once I picked it up I could hardly put it down. It was an absolute pleasure to read. The book is beautifully written and well researched; it brings the period it which is written (London in the 1800’s) to life. This historical novel tells the same story from different points of view; and has some very interesting storylines. Women thank goodness have come a long way since the 1800’s. The story line that most touched me – when you mess with peoples lives, the truth will always out.

Hallo daar, gelukkige vinder!
