Prodigal Summer
17 journalers for this copy...
This book got me through a horribly long computer conference in San Diego. I enjoyed The Poisenwood Bible better, but I thought it was interesting to see where she came from to arrive at that work

On its way to oldreader. Enjoy!
yes I was right, all the rings are arriving at once, better read fast.....
/i really enjoyed this.was the 2nd I have read by this author.the story (3) stories were very moving and the characters believable. This is an interesting story set in the appalachains about several neighbors/families and their intertwining lives. Will get in the mail this week to next reader.thanks for making this a ring.
Prodigal Summer arived safe and sound today. I will read it as quickly as I can. You can track my progress on my bookshelf. I tend to finish books before the date I promise. :)
If I could give this book a twenty, I would! By page 11 I was completely absorbed into the world of Zebulon Valley. Twelve Hours later I had finished the book! It reminds me a few books I read in the summer of 1996: The Joshua Tree by Robert Cabot and One Summer by James R. Osgood. If you enjoy Prodigal Summer I recommend these other books. :)

U.S. MAIL in -- Mail or by hand-ring, RABCK, meetings, Arizona USA on Monday, November 3, 2003
Just received this - wow, you guys are fast readers! I will try to get through this and pass it on. I know what it feels like to be towards the bottom of the list! :)
I really enjoyed this novel! Barbara Kingsolver has a wonderful view of the world, which she expresses through the thoughts of her characters. I loved the way that these characters slowly wound their way towards each other, all connecting in the end.
Now this is on its way to eskielover!
I received this book in the mail today. Thanks for sending it.
I finished this book last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The blending of the "fame and fortune" of 3 families of a mountian and valley area in the Appalachian Mountains makes for interesting reading.
The return of the "prodigals", and the "prodigal" coyotes to the mountain and valley is a powerful story. Mix in the messages about over use of pesticides and the fate of the small farmers and you get a book that holds you almost against your will. I will get this book in the mail to LeapingLizards tomorrow.
I sent this book onto LeapingLizzards today. Enjoy!
Received this in the mail yesterday. It came just in time. I finished the other book I was reading this morning and will start Prodigal Summer tonight
Loved it! Loved it! Sent it on its way this morning.
I received this book today. I am looking forward to reading it. I have to finish the book that I am reading and then read another ring before I get to it. Thanks Rampallion!
This was an excellent story of three proud independent women and how they came to terms with the lives that they had and the lives that they were destined to lead. It was an excellent Kingsolver novel. Thank you Rampallion for sharing the book. I will mail it to you by next weekend (I am out of town right now.)

Thanks to Rampallion and DSM for sharing this. I just got it in the mail. I am going to update this journal entry as soon as I am done with it.
This is just a little note to update my fellow BXers on my progress. I am trying to catch up with my reading, after a couple of hectic months. Unfortunately, because I started graduate school, my reading speed has decreased, since I have to make time for studying. :o( I am sorry for the delay and I hope to get to this book by the end of the month. I expect to finish it rather quickly - Barbara Kingsolver's writing is so enthralling!
I received a gently nudge from DSM :o) and I hope I am not trying your patience too much. Pleas PM me if you`d rather have me mail the book immediately without reading it.
Well, it took me a little longer that I expected to finish this book, and I hope all the BXers after me will forgive once they get their noses into this wonderful book. This is my second Kingsolver book . I absolutely loved Pigs in Heaven, so I had high expectations for this one. I was not disappointed at all.
Kingsolver's prose is so rich, her transitions from one story to the next are so smooth and elegant, that it is hard to pick a favorite part in this book.
Although all her characters are presented in depth and she allows us to be sympathetic to each of them in turns, I think my favorite feature in this book is her voluptuous description of Nature in Zebulon county. I loved the way she intertwined the natural history of the mountains with the stories of Deanna, Lusa, Nannie, and Garnett.
This is an excellent book and I feel guilty to have kept it so long! :o( I will mail it to tnelson99 the day after tomorrow.

RELEASE NOTES:
mailing to tnelson99 today! Happy reading!
I received this book a few weeks ago and will be starting it in a few days...
Asking the next in line their address so I can send the book out this week. I just couldnt get to read it with all the craziness.
Mailing to bookhogger today as she is next on the bookring. THANKS!
Just got this in the mail today and finished my other novel last night so this will quickly slip to the top of my reading pile.
Thanks for sharing this - I don't think I have been involved in a bookring with so many other readers. The book is in fine shape, but is a little soft and worn - perfect. All the better to rest in my hands.
I love this book. It always makes me want to leave this urban existence and return to the countryside, where I belong.
The characters are complicated and interesting. The prose is not so heavy that you get weighed down by it. The stories leave me with a feeling of hope. I think I might have to buy a copy for my permanent bookshelf.
So good.
Well, I have sent out a few emails to Andthings with no reply - will now try and contact the next person on the list
Rampallion pushing in here to say that I finally read my copy of this book! It was a little preachy in spots, but overall I enjoyed it tremendously. All the information about ecology was interesting, and Kingsolver can really develop a character. I hope this book continues to travel.

RELEASE NOTES:
I sent this off a few days ago in the mail.
Enjoy!
Has arrived with me in London. Looking forward to this one.
The character development in this book had me all wrapped up right from the start. The depth and completeness of Deanna and Lusa had me hooked, and loving KIngsolver.
I will admit, I did find the 'Old Chestnuts" a bit tiresome and even boring at times, but just when I was deciding that many I will start skipping their chapters, the link was dropped in! Couldn't skip any after that!
The scientist in Kingsolver made her observations and lessons about all things environmental interesting, although some parts were a bit preachy for mine. Just some repetition that wasn't needed. She certainly had got her point across.
One of Kingsolvers best, up there with one of my all time favourite reads, The Poisonwood Bible.
Just waiting now for an address. Have been PMing down the line...
I have PMed down the line, and got a series of "please skip me", or no responses. I will set this as available and wait to see if there is any interest. Otherwise, I will set it free!
Picked up as part of a trade with Hawkette whilst we had a catch up, drank some beer and visited the British Museum!
FINALLY got to this book during a concerted effort to get Mt TBR whittled down a little!
I wasn't as enamoured of this book as some of its previous readers. Although Kingsolver's characters were well drawn, I found myself wishing that a good editor had encouraged her to 'trim down' some of the descriptive passages and get the narrative moving along. I also felt this about 'The Poisonwood Bible', so perhaps its more of a statement regarding my own reading tastes than the writer's particular style. Overall, I found this book reasonably engaging, but not enough to keep me gripped!
I want to keep this book travelling amongst other bookcrossers, if possible, so will probably take it along to the next meetup I attend.

I just love it when a book seeks me out after travelling for so long. It's condition is quite good however I will give it a little TLC by covering it and then hopefully it will be good for years more of freedom.

Great storyline, wonderful characters - interwoven skillfully. I enjoyed this much travelled book, it was first released over ten years ago. Although showing signs of its wander lust it should be good for many years of travel yet. I shall seek out a reader who will ensure it continues its journey.

I loved this book. It is not the type of fiction I usually read, but I am really keen to read more of Barbara Kingsolver's works now. The characters were so real and flawed that you could identify with them all, as different as they were. After it ended I wanted to keep reading to see where their stories would take them. It would be incredibly easy to write a sequel about the lives of the people of Zebulon Valley.
