It's supposed to be this great story, about a dysfunctional family, totally split up. Dad has got Parkinsons, and Mum wants the entire family to get together one more time, for christmas at home.

Personally couldn't get through this one. I hear a lot of people talking about the recognition factor of this book. I also heard people say that if they wanted to know about a dysfunctional family, they only have to look at their own.

I just find the entire family to be incredibly boring, and I did something I cannot remember doing before (though I probably have, I just can't remember) and I conciously made the decision not to finish a book. I got half way.

Good luck to the next happy reader, it's supposed to be a great book!

Released on Tuesday, September 09, 2003 at Vertigo in het vondelpark in Amsterdam, Noord Holland Netherlands.

Gave this book to Yvonnep, who had it on her wishlist. In return I received two Kinky Friedman books from her.

Even though officially the BC Meet-up was cancelled today, we met there for coffee anyhow, and had our own little BookCrossing going on!

It was nice to meet you, Yvonnep, happy Crossing!

Erbie gave this book to me in Vertigo, a place you should go oftener than I do. Thank you Erbie, I hope I will like the dysfunctional family. I liked our little meeting and hope to meet you again at a next bc meeting whenever wherever.

In the meantime: Erbie is a well loved and active crosser and I still haven't read Franzen's book. So up to the next: Suzy26 will get it.

Thank you ever so much for giving this book to me at today's BC meeting, yvonnep! I have been wanting to read this one for a long time. Will I be the first one who is going to read this book from cover to cover? We'll see. One way or the other, I will let you know.

This is one brutally honest story about family relationships. Extremely well written, dealing with real-life characters. Hilarious in part, very sad and confronting in other parts. Most of the story is all too recognizable. The high expectations that parents have of their children and the disappointment once their children fall short of these expectations. In their turn children are forever trying to earn their parents' approval and the guilt is laid on very thick if they donot succeed in doing so. Dealing with the fact that one of your parents is gradually changing from a consenting adult into a stubborn, confused child by Parkinson's disease. What a humiliating process!
This is definitely not an uplifting novel, but still I did enjoy it immensely and I am left with a feeling of great awe for an author who can write a novel like this.

RELEASE NOTES:

I hope to find a new reader for this book at today's BC meeting in Capelle aan den IJssel.
