I've been eyeing this one for a while. I'd like to keep it in my personal collection for now, but am willing to lend it to family and friends that may be interested -Charlie_Brown? Symphonicca?

From the back cover: "We want answers. We know something isn't quite right with our food or the system that is producing it. Friends and family are getting sick; food is losing its flavour. Every day a new report links disease with particular foods. Locally grown and organic food can be difficult to find. And in a country where food is plentiful, giving to food banks doesn't seem to be diminshing the growing ranks of the hungry.

Real Food for a Change is a powerful tool for alleviating the growing anxiety about food and shows us elegently simple solutions as home-based as the dinner table. Many books deal with the connection between diet and health. Real Food for a Change is the only book that connects individual health with the health of the community, the economy and the planet. This visionary guide helps you make positive environmental and ethical decisions about how and what you eat.

-discover ten reasons why eating organic food is the best decision you'll ever make
-learn about low-cost foods that deliver high value
-improve your family's and community's health with every food shopping expedition
-find out how changing what you eat chan reduce greenouse gases.

Get ready for a meal you'll never forget - the Real Food revolution is just beginning!"

Wow! What an interesting book! Both Mr. Jenny-Lou-Who and I are are vegetarians and try to buy locally-produced food whenever possible, but this book really opened my eyes to the importance of seeking out organic food as well.

This book prompted us to do some research and we've since discovered a local company, Desert Lake Gardens, that delivers locally-grown organic produce! Very exciting!

I really appreciated that this was a book put together by Canadian researchers and that it provided examples of people and businesses in Canada who are finding very innovative ways of turning the "Real Food" philosophy into a reality. Very inspiring indeed!

There were times when I found myself wanting to know more - more about how something worked or more evidence to back up some of the claims that were made. I realize that writers can't include everything in a book, but perhaps a list of titles for further reading or a comprehensive bibliography would help out in this area.

Mr. Jenny-Lou-Who is going to give this a read and then I'm going to send it to symphonicca as she expressed interest in it too.

Wow! I am freaked, but in a good way. I was particularly struck by the info on the foods most contaminated by pesticides and chemincals, most of which i eat on a regular basis. I usually didn't buy organic, not because i mind the spots on my apples (don't worry joanie mitchell), but because of the price. This book has helped me to see that it might be in my best interests, and in the best interests of my surrounding community, to start budgeting and investing in organic foodstuffs.

I agree with j-l-w's insights about beefing up the bibliography, and substantiating some of their arguments, but on the whole, it did it's job on my end. I am moderately convinced (ie: convinced enough to start making lifestyle changes).

Thank you to the ever-generous and stupendously splendid jenny-lou-who for passing this book on to me! I have enjoyed it immensely, and appreciate your willingness to share it with me! You rock! :)
