this was a present from a dear american friend, but now it's ready to go and find friends of its own.

it's been a while so i can't remember any details, really, but the blurb at the back reads as follows:

"the girls' guide to hunting and fishing maps the progress of jane rosenal as she sets out on a personal and spirited expedition through the perilous terrain of sex, love, and relationships, and the treacherous waters of the workplace."

4 out of 10

Sain kirjan eilen luettua. Harppailtiin liikaa. Postitan tänään Tintille.

Depressing. Not funny.

Luckily this book was a quick and easy read - had it been any longer or harder one, I wouldn't have finished it.

I don't know why this book is compared with Bridget Jones. I can't see a connection there, except that both are about a woman who dates men. I'm not a great fan of Bridget Jones, but at least she is sometimes funny. This book wasn't funny at all, it was only boring.

I think the story was meaningless and dull. I just didn't get the point of it, if there was any. Anyway, I read the book on a Sunday night when I was too lazy to do anything that needed brains, so this was okay for the situation. Wouldn't read it again, though.

I enjoyed reading this book. It seems to capture the essence of our time, of our lives and expectations. But I feel that after ten or twenty years no-one will remember this book. The story and the atmosphere won't touch people then. It'll probably only feel naive. So read it while it's still fresh.

I liked this book. In my opinion, it wasn't dull or confusing. The only confusing part was the story called "You Could Be Anyone". I have no idea who the story told about (I didn't have that problem with the other stories). But perhaps the idea of the story was that the main character really could be anyone.

I loved it when Jane asked her grandmother what she missed from "the good old days" and she told Jane about the boy who always lit the streetlamps.

I enjoyed this book too. I think it was because I had no expectations whatsoever. I didn't know what it was about really when I picked it up, but the writing style was easy to read and catchy. I loved the two teenaged girls excuse for why they couldn't join in on the joint at the beach party! What a great strategy! The one story that I couldn't get was the one about the family that had nothing whatsoever to do with the main character and her family. Why was that one in there?

This book is ready to continue its travels. :-)

I have to admit I finally gave up on this one. The first few chapters were entertaining but the "Best Possible Light" chapter lost me - perhaps all those characters where in the last chapter as well?? Stories seemed to just drag on after that. Gave up and went to bed and now it's available : )

Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others. I laughed at Jane’s witty quips and I cried over the ending of her relationships. I found the “mysterious” chapter to be an entertaining short story all by itself! -It was certainly better than the last one that featured those alter ego, dating advisors.

When Jane was with her much-older boyfriend, Archie, I was reminded of some of the struggles that I’ve had to face with my older husband.

Looking forward to passing this book on to the next fellow Bookcrosser who requests it!

i didn't dislike the book but i didn't love it either. it was an easy and fast read and an entertaining story. i'm not sure if it tried to make a point but at least it was to some degree entertaining. what pissed me off about the mystery story was that i got really curious about the circumstances of the pregnancy and how everything would work out but unfortunately it was never told.

i decided to start a small ray with this book after i found a couple people who wished for this book.

I enjoyed reading this, but I got frustrated at the main character's constant search for a "daddy" to tell her what to do and take care of her. By the end she'd gone through her real father, her much older lover, her boss, the self-absorbed guy with a motorcycle, even the imaginary dating advisors. Is this "chick-lit"?

In the mail to surmisez, 3/18/05.

I enjoyed the way the book started out. This first part reminded me of Judy Blume's teenage characters. I would've like to read more about Jane as she went from adolescent to an adult. The abrupt changes throughout the book were disconcerting.

The worst was the "Nina" part. I thought that Jane must have had some sort of mental breakdown, changed her name, lived in a commune, and had a few children (not necessarily in that order). I don't understand why that part of the book was written in first person. It wasn't until almost the end of that section that I realized that Nina was Jane's aunt's neighbor. I still don't understand why that's part of the book, but on the other hand, what happened to the two pregnancies? How does the family deal with these two half-siblings that are the same age? And what of Isabelle and Giancarlo? Nothing like leaving readers hanging in the wind.

But then it seems as though Jane does have a mental breakdown, when she's having conversations with the authors of the book she reads. And not only do the imaginary women talk back, they are seen to do many different things, like putting on pantyhose and having drinks. This part of the book was beyond bizarre.

The book was laugh-out-loud funny at times, but not one of my favorite reads.

Thanks again, outofreach, for including me in your BookRay.

I have PM'd traqua for her address.

Finished reading last night. This book just didn't do it for me. If I was supposed to feel sympathy for Jane I didn't, she seemed like a typical "chick-lit" heroine to me, there was nothing special about the character that made me care. Will pm the next person for their shipping info. Thanks for including me in this ray.

Unlike some of the previous readers, I really enjoyed this book. I received it at noon and had it finished at midnight. I could really relate to many of the stories in the book. Being young still, I've had my share of rocky romantic relationships and crazy family incidents. I would definitely give it a B+.

Sending on to laurarn in Tulsa. Enjoy!!

This was a cute, quick read. I liked the 1st few chapters, when she was a young girl best. The character seemed more honest. As the character grew into adulthood she just sort of became a sterotype, kind of a sad change from the unique kid. But, overall a fun book. I am going to PM next on list and will mail when I get the address.

I enjoyed this book though it was not at all what I expected. I agree with some earlier readers who stated that it was far more "real literature" than chick lit though I had always thought that it was chick lit.

I also didn't expect it to be a series of stories. I thought that it was a pretty effective narrative technique for the main story but like many others, I had no idea what was going on with the random chapter about the family downstairs in the aunt's building.

I'm putting it in the mail now to bakerwhencan to continue the bookray.
