Gathering Blue

This was very, very good. 'The Giver' is more well-known, but I thought they were both equally wonderful.
A Mini-Bookray! I sent this on to AnnaKY yesterday (yes, a day late...), and from there it will go to AngelKitty, then on to Katayoun.
Thank you for sending this off in a bookray! I'm looking forward to reading it soon... possibly even tonight! :)
This was a good read. I planned to only spend 45 minutes on it last night, but two hours later, I had finished it. It's similar to the style of The Giver, but with a clearer ending. Now I'm even more eager to read Messenger when it comes out!

Left orphaned and physically flawed in a civilization that shuns and discards the weak, Kira faces a frighteningly uncertain future. Her neighbors are hostile and no one but a small boy offers to help. When she is summoned to judgement by The Council of Guardians, Kira prepares to fight for her life. But the Council, to her suprise, has plans for her. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, the young girl faces new responsibilities and a set of mysteries deep within the only world she has ever known. On her quest for truth, Kira discovers things that will change her life and world forever.
A compelling examination of a future soceity, Gathering Blue challenges readers to think about community, creativity, and the values that they have learned to accept. Once again Lois Lowry brings readers on a provocative journey that inspires contemplation long after the last page is turned.
Heliz922 said this was just as good a book as The Giver. I would have to disagree. I loved Gathering Blue much more. (and not just because the ending is clearer *smile* ) This is, of course, going on the "books to read our children" list, as well as my "must buy and re-read" list. After reading just these two, it's pretty clear that I'm going to have to look more closely into Lois Lowry's other works. While the plot twists (all but one) were expected, I chalk that up to being older and having read more. For a children's book, this was incredible.

this book was beautiful, poetic, romantic and so ...don't know... simple. it was simple and straight from the heart and oh so hopeful. at the start of the book kira's looking for the blue, the one thing that she hasn't and at the end there are so many things learned and so many truths told, and so many paths to chose from... it's pretty great story and thanks and now it will continue on it's way

Paynesville/MN/USA - Just got back to Minnesota yesterday and discovered this gorgeous hardcover waiting for me! :-D It looks wonderful, and I'll read it ASAP!
Paynesville/MN/USA - Excellent book! I loved it! While the ending may have been clearer than The Giver I was still wishing for just one more chapter. ;-D Even so, it was still wonderfully thought provoking and beautifully written. It is the second book I've read recently that involved possible, and highly frightening, futures of the human race. The other was Eva and I would highly recommend it. Both made me think about how we treat other people and the leaders we choose. What amazed me it that they are both children's books! Guess I'll be visiting that section more often! :-D Anyway, I thought it was great and I'll be passing it on to gerenggat as soon as I receive and address.
Thanks katyoun for starting this ring and for the postcard; I didn't find it until I reached the end! :-D

The book has safely arrived in the UK, thanks
What a wonderful book :-) I didn't even realise it is supposed to be a childrens book until I read the journal entries here. This is definetly a book to come back to in the future. Thank you everyone for sharing it, as I had never heard about this author before. I will now look out for other books by her.
