My FAVOURITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. Released to in the mail to fanclub in HAwaii on 19th September 2003.
A fantastic (the best ever) package arrived in my box the other day (just finding a minute now to log on)! Thanks so much for sending along the gorgeous postcards and so many terrific extra books for me to peruse. My kids are fascinated with the Australian creatures and are having lots of fun thumbing through the book & I'm noting down several of the scrumptious sounding treats. I haven't tried the "Vegemite" spread just yet but for years I've been curious as to what it truly was and if it truly existed. Remember that song by "Men At Work" "Who Can It Be Now?" My dad & I always thought "vegemite" was a made up word to fit the song! It brought back a fun memory for me from years past ~ wish my dad were still around so I could share the vegemite with him :) Anyway, thanks bunches! I'll write more when we've finished pawing all of the wonderful treasures.
Wow, what a wonderful little story! I just finished reading this to my 7 year old son & 5 year old daughter (who both loved it) & asked them what they liked most. My daughter said (with no prompting from me)
SPOILERS!!! if you haven't read it yet
"when she turned the prince into a toad with the kiss". My son said "when she kissed the prince." Guess you can see who the romantic is going to be? :) My son was also perplexed as to why the princess, who looked so upset only a page before, was going to give the prince a big kiss. I said "just you wait". My boy may be wary of kisses in the future ;) We adored this, wish there were more stories like this one to encourage young girls' it's okay to be themselves. I'm buying a copy for our home.

Sending this great package off to caligula03. Enjoy!!

The books arrived today. I will read all of them as soon as I can. I'll probably pass on the Vegemite as I've had enough of it to last a life time when I was an AFSer in Tasmania. :P
The illustrations are cute and the story is too but I don't like the ending. Princess Smarty-Pants is only a child. Of course she isn't ready to get married. But who knows if she may change her mind in 10 years or so? How long exactly is "ever-after"? Or if a prince isn't to her liking, maybe a princess? I realize this is a childrens' book but I don't like the absoluteness of the solution.

The good news.... this has arrived today.
The bad news.... the Vegemite had exploded en route to Virginia.
I have managed to clean most of it off the books, and all but one postcard escaped, but the letter suffered big time - I have cleaned that up too and will put it in a plastic bag for posterity's sake when it's dry - and the Vegemite itself has been consigned to the trash, I'm afraid. The smell will linger on the books though, so all is not quite lost ;-)
I took a couple of photos and will add them to the journal entries when I've got round to uploading them...
Erm, thanks....

I didn't enjoy this one as much as Possum Magic, but my girls adored it! My reservations were along the same lines as caligula03's - and we already have a great subversive princess book called The Paper Bag Princess, which I prefer because it doesn't project such a negative view of marriage itself, but the princess rejects her prince-fiancé because of his snobbiness. Here's a link to the Amazon review for that one. Hope it works! Funnily enough the first-listed "customers who bought this book also bought" on Amazon was Princess Smartypants!
Thanks for sharing this - it was fun and my girls will be sad to see it go!
