Journal Entry 5 by karendawn from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Saturday, November 22, 2003
This one wasn't too bad, but I did finally figure out what bothers me about these books. It's simple: I don't really care about the children. Yes, they have personalities, but I don't find them extremely sympathetic characters. Plus, the story is always so predictable. The children go to another guardian, Count Olaf shows up in disguise, bad things happen, Count Olaf is revealed, Count Olaf escapes. Not much variety, just different settings. So the children are never truly in danger. Nothing really happens or matters.

Yay! Snicket fix! Hmm... bad casserole... OK, that *is* scary. Thanks karendawn! PS - am about halfway through "House of Spirits" and so far it's really good.

I love Snicket's little puns and witticisms. "Dr. Orwell" fit in oh so nicely with Olaf's ocular imagery :) Hopefully Snicket will evetually stop re-using the same plot though!

I felt bad for keeping these books on my shelf for so long, so I dropped them off today at the BC (as in British Columbia, not Bookcrossing!) Children's Hospital, even though I never got the whole series together as planned. Thanks again for sending this book!
