Journal Entry 1 by bryghtrose from Salem, Massachusetts USA on Monday, August 04, 2003
This is an interesting, disturbing book about an American tourist in Thailand. It is very well written, and the plot is interesting. However, I don't much like books about people losing themselves. All of the characters in this book are lost souls, and no one knows if they'll heal.

I suppose that I also tend to dislike stories about people who "lose themselves," as bryghtrose expressed, but I didn't quite know it. Even though I read the whole novel in one sitting (unusual for me), I wasn't impressed with the writing and the plot was somewhat predictable and shallow. I couldn't relate to any of the characters and found them all slightly annoying at best. There were no moments of enlightenment for me, etc. An average read, but I could see that it would appeal to people with different values and lifestyles from my own.
