Loved, loved, loved this book, it managed to keep me, a non-race enthusiast glued to it's every page. I read this riding down to Los Angeles and it has genuine "Disney Magic" on it, because I read it while sitting by the edge of the Disneyland Hotel pool.

This book arrived in today's mail. I will start reading it today!
I am very embarrased to say that I didn't care for this book at all. In fact, after several attempts to get into it I gave up and did not get past page 60. I don't know why I just don't seem to like books that other people go crazy for. It sounded like a great story, but `I just didn't like it. Maybe I will go rent the movie instead and see what I missed.
This book will continue its travel to MollyGrue this Saturday if I get the address on time to make my post office run that day. Otherwise it will go out as soon as I get the address.

Got this in the mail yesterday and look forward to reading it. I should get to it soon.
I really liked this book. I had seen the movie, but the book was waaaaay better. My friends are probably much tired about hearing me rave about by now, and my husband has kindly put up with little bits read to him when I found them amusing. Now, on to the next person!

This was an enjoyable book.
I haven’t seen the recent movie based on this book. I have seen the highly fictionalized 1949 movie The Story of Seabiscuit with Shirley Temple and Barry Fitzgerald. The race scenes in that movie—often footage of the real Seabiscuit (especially for the race with War Admiral, where Hollywood couldn’t find convincing stand-ins)—are amazing to watch.
And the book has that same “amazing” feel. Just about the time you think “the Biscuit” has events all sewed up, fate rears up and smacks down the horse and his followers. And about the time you think nothing will ever go right for the horse, Seabiscuit makes some incredible effort and pulls off another miracle.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I’m glad I’ve read it. I appreciated the way Hillenbrand made the characters—two-legged and four-legged—come alive for the reader. You can’t read this book and come away feeling that Seabiscuit was a racing automaton. He was a living, breathing, thinking, feeling creature, and you won’t doubt that after you read this book.
The book will be setting off for Australia soon.

Arrived in the mail today and it's second in line in the TBR pile,so I'll report in soon!
Just a quick updating entry to note that I have -not- forgotten the book! I'm halfway through and enjoying it, but we're moving house - my boyfriend undertook to pack some of my stuff because I'm stressing out over exams, and all my bookcrossing books ended up in a box too. I'll turn it up as I unpack over the next ten days, and get it in the post ASAP.

Wow. I mean, wow, wow, wow. Loved it! I had gotten a little way in a while ago, but it had yet to grab me. In fact, I took it backpacking with me because I thought it might take a while to read, and that it would last me a while on the trip. How wrong can you get? I picked it up again and started from the start on an overnight train trip, and was barely heard from again until I was finished. My boyfriend just couldn't understand why I was suddenly so antisocial, or why I left him there getting hungry while I raced through the pages to find out what happened... (but come on, it was the race against War Admiral, I could hardly go out not knowing how it ended!). A day later, when I pressed it on him and insisted he read it, he understood what had happened. It was my turn to sit around and wait for -him- to finish the big race so we could go out!
I'm not a horseracing person at all, but I was glued to every page of this story! It read like fiction, and I had to keep reminding myself that it was true, and that no outcome was guaranteed! Thanks very much for sharing it - watch out for my boyfriend's journal entry, coming soon!

Got lost temporarily, but relocated and posted to boreal today. A thousand apologies for the delay!
Arrived today and I am looking forward to it, thanks for posting it oneocean. I will start it as soon as I have finished my current book (have less than 100 pages to go so it won't be long). I hope no one minds, but my husband wants to read it also.
What a great book! I hadn't realized that a non-fiction book about a race horse could be so exciting. Knowing that this book was coming I avoided seeing the film (my husband hired out the DVD recently) so everything was new to me, though I must admit cheating a bit- fairly early in the piece I discovered the list of Seabiscuits race results in the back of the book which I referred when the suspense got too great!
It was really interesting to learn about the American racing industry in the 1930's. The hype that surrounded Seabiscuit was really amazing, but what a horse he was -so intellegent and knowing. I liked the way we learnt about all the players in the Seabiscuit story and the authors note at the back where she tells us how she learnt their stories was great to read too.
My husband is reading this at the moment and can hardly put it down so it won't be long before I post it on. I am also going to tell my parents to get this out of the library as I am sure it will be a book they will enjoy as well, so thanks very much Beachglass and AuntyK for sharing this great book!
Thanks again for sharing this

This book has arrived safely last Thursday (the 23th). I see that I'm the last one on the ray, so I guess I don't have to hurry now. ;-) I've already thumbed through it and it looks really nice with all those pictures. I've seen the movie and I'm sure the book will be even better! I'm looking forward to reading it soon and after that I'll release it again as soon as possible. I'll keep you posted!
Thanks beachglass for organising this ray! :-)
Thanks boreal for sending it along and for the interesting brochure about the albatross centre (how did you know that I love animals and nature!). :-)
And a big thank you to all the other participants of this ray!!! :-)

Okay, I've finished this book last weekend and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought I would be expecting too much and in a way I thought the story might be a bit boring, as watching a horserace (like in the movie) would be more interesting than just reading the description. But no, it was really very exciting just reading about it. And as always when I'm reading, the story plays as a movie in my head. :-)
I found it beautiful, the way that Seabiscuit was seen as a person and not just as a 'thing'. And also how Smith had his way with horses... a real horsewhisperer... who treats his horses with respect and love. I find that amasing and so touching... the bond that there can be between people and(other) animals.
The story also shows how 'coincidences', or should I say 'serendipity', bring people (and horses) together... the way Howard found Smith... the way Smith found Seabiscuit... the way the three of them found Pollard. Together they made all this happen. Would this 'legend' have excisted if there had been a different trainer, a different jocky, a different horse?
I enjoyed this book very much and I would like to let it continue as a Bookray. I'm planning to send a personal message to the people who have "Seabiscuit" on their wishlist and also put it up on the forum soon. So this book will probably resume its journey in August! :-)

I LOVED this book! It is in every part as exciting as the movie and although I knew the ending, I still bawled my eyes out while reading that last race, LOL! This is really a terrific book about an amazing little horse!!
I'll PM RoryG for her address and send the book on to her once I have it.

Arrived already friday, but I have been away for the weekend, so I just got it today. I have another bookring before this, but I should get to this shortly.
I'm sorry this took me so long, but I've had big changes in my life that have slown down my reading. But now the book is ready to continue its journey.
I just loved this book. I joined the ray because I had read somewhere that this was a good book but forgotten everything but the name. I was actually waiting for a novel and not biography. I'm glad that I read it, though. I didn't know much about horse racing before, but this book got me glued to the races. I just couldn't put the book down (although I had to, since one must sleep and work, unfortunately). I couldn't help falling in love with Seabiscuit :)
I will send the book on its way as soon as I get the next person's address.
Edit 2.12.2005: The book was sent 24.10.2005.

At last it has arrived! A mistake at the Post Office caused this serious delay. I got it yesterday and I have already started it. Looks great.
I forgot to log this book on its arrival, so I do apologise. What can I say that hasn't already been said? This book is absolutely wonderful - I loved it! Oh, do have seen that little horse - I think I have fallen in love with him.
Received okay, and next on the pile! Thanks! :)
An amazing book about a truly amazing horse. Totally absorbing, and completely awe-inspiring!
Sending onto reddragonlady today. :)

Received in the mail today. I've been really looking forward to reading this. I'll finish my current book, and then start on this one.
Like others, I've never really been into horse racing, and while the names were familiar, I really didn't know anything about them. I saw a few minutes of the movie once on TV, but wanted to watch it from the beginning, but never got the chance. That's fine with me, because I finally got to read the book, which is always much better. My son tried telling me that the movie is faster, and I said, "Yeah, but you don't get the whole story. Did the movie tell you about the huge pile of $hit that...." lol My son thinks that little story is a huge pile of .... Didn't believe the jockeys would do that. This book did a great job of introducing me to the world of horse racing in the 1930's, and the story of Seabiscuit has you really rooting for this horse with a great big heart.
Mailed this out yesterday. Sorry I forgot to journal it at the time.
Received yesterday in the post. I've put it on the TBR pile, I still have another one ahead of it, but I promise to get to this one ASAP. Thanks for sharing :)
Terribly sorry, I made the above journal entry without realising I wasnt logged in... oops!
A story well worth reading, thanks for sharing it :) Am now sending on to the next participant to enjoy. Will mail it out in a week's time.
Just received this book in the mail today, have added it to my TBR pile ... thanks ...
