Picked this up for cheap in the english section of the second hand shop. Never heard of the book or the author, but it was awarded the Whitbread Novel of the Year 1998, and was shortlisted for a bunch of stuff. So, let's give it a try!
From the back: "Two thousand years ago four travellers entered the Judean desert to fast and pray for their lost souls. In the blistering heat and barren rocks they encounter the evil merchant Musa-- madman, sadist, rapist, even a Satan-- who holds them in his tyrannical power. Yet there is also another, a faint figure in the distance, fasting for forty days, a Galilean who they say has the power to work miracles..."
Sounds good.

This is really a great book--- it flows over you like sand, despite the plodding and painful context (sometimes downright cruel). There are so many themes, insights and stories packed into this book. For me, it was about truth, connection (with self or others) and ultimately liberation. Though liberation is both an act of subtraction and addition in this story. Quarantine and that act of subtraction can provide the opportunity to understand what one truely needs for true liberation, power and peace.
Layers layers layers. I am not doing this book justice. It really is very good, and I would love to explore so much of it in greater detail. Will look for more from this author for sure!
