This book is in a Controlled Release!
5 journalers for this copy...
This was given to me as a christmas present, but forgot to register until now. I hear it is quite good and have wanted to read it for some time--- thanks Jeannet! :)
From the back: "At the tender age of 18, Nazneen's life is turned upside down. After an arranged marriage to a man twenty years her elder she exchanges her Bangladeshi village for a block of flats in London's east end. In this new world where poor people can be fat and even dogs go on diets, she struggles to make sense of her existence-- and to do her duty to her husband."
Will get to it soonish!

I was a little skeptical since i usually shy away from books that have been made into movies, but this was a great book--- quiet, touching, funny, powerful. Nazneen was a rich and complicated character with great insight and capacity for wisdom, and I actually loved the character Chanu in all his ridiculousness and flaws. Like everyone, he is embodies so much of what it means to be human, and with all the passions, pride and disappointments that come with existing.
The ending was not the most realistic in many senses, but at the same time satisfying--- perhaps i shed a tear.... :)
Will look for more from Ali

It was interesting to read about another culture, so different to mine. I didn't know a thing about Bangladesh. I couldn't stand the characters, their choices, and the violence, but again, it is a different culture.
Thanks again symphonicca for sending this book to me :-)

I love surprises (but who doesn't)... wishlist surprises are even better. Thank you so much marilina85 for the book, I hope I can read it soon. :D
Ali was a very easy way to tell a hard story. I read this book as quickly as my eyes let me and although I was very happy with the ending I realize that she wanted to be (probably too) optimistic about the world. But we need happy endings sometimes.
