Corelli's Mandolin: A Novel
3 journalers for this copy...
This has been on my TBR shelf far too long. Sending it to another BCer with it on her Wishlist.
Enjoy!
What a nice surprise!! You have blessed me. This is also a 1001 book to read before you die.
Picked it up to begin reading. I have read about 10 pages, so I am off and walking.....
This book was well written with a good insight into the environment of Greece during and after WWII. I gave it an 8 instead of a 9 because it took me so long to read. I only read about 20 - 30 pages a day.
Enjoy! off to wheepaperclips for the ABC virtural bookbox.
Received in the mail today. Thanks again, booklady331!
Loved this one. I'll write a review later, but I loved it so much I already added the author's other books to my TBR shelf.
EDIT:
This is a long, beautiful book about Greece during World War II. It explores the mixed emotions of soldiers, many of whom have no idea what they're fighting for and whether their side is even on their side. It shows how love is affected by, and transcends, war. It moves through generations, taking the reader through one woman's journey from teenaged puppy love to her daily trials and tribulations as an old woman.
So many of the characters were memorable, and each had a likable trait, which made them more realistic. I appreciated the silly bits, especially the domesticated pine marten and insatiable goat.
Not sure how I felt about how the central love story resolved, but that doesn't matter. I don't think I've yet read a better piece of historical fiction than this, nor one that was able to evoke so much emotion in me while still making me laugh. This is one of my new favorites.

Loaned this one to my dad.
My dad read this one. He felt that the last 50-100 pp were weak and rushed (and I agree), but he enjoyed the book overall.
This is now available for the next BCer.
