At last, another mystery featuring Superintendent Richard Jury. Martha Grimes is one of my favourite authors. While I didn't think this was her best, I read it straight through (and it made me laugh several times).

Publisher's description:
Three months have passed since Richard Jury was left bereft and guilt- ridden after his lover's tragic auto accident, and he is now more wary than ever. He is deeply suspicious when requested on a case far out of his jurisdiction in an outlying village where a young woman has been murdered behind the local pub. The only witness is the establishment's black cat, who gives neither crook nor clue as to the girl's identity or her killer's.

Identifying the girl becomes tricky when she's recognized as both the shy local librarian and a posh city escort, and Jury must use all his wits and intuition to determine the connection to subsequent escort murders. Meanwhile, Jury's nemesis, Harry Johnson, continues to goad Jury down a dangerous path. And Johnson, along with the imperturbable dog Mungo, just may be the key to it all.

I received this book in the mail today- yay! I also really like the nostalgic postcard of 1917 Granville with the streetcars. I used to live walking distance from Granville in my 20's and it's hard to believe that Granville ever looked so tranquil and clean - beautiful card!

This book was not bad :) It is the first book I've ever read by Martha Grimes. I liked the Richard Jury character and even though I am not familiar with the rest of the series I laughed out loud a few times, too. I'll never be able to think of Jason Bourne the same way again (see pg 62).
I am going to reserve this for the international mystery VBB hosted by bookstogive so that another mystery fan can enjoy it

This one came in the mail yesterday, along with my other selection from the VBB. Kitty was quite excited when I told her it was sent by someone with her same name -- or maybe it was because I let her play with the paper wrapping.

Looking forward to this one because I love Grimes and I love cats. I see from the JEs below that this is a very recent installment in the series. While I haven't read the series in any order, I will probably wait until I've read the earlier installments already on Mt. TBR. I am looking forward to encountering Mungo again.

I really do enjoy Martha Grimes and her characters, as well as the mysteries she writes. This one I had an idea where it was going because of all the reference to other film titles, but it was still a little surprising to find out whodunit. I am glad to see that Jury is not making his personal life quite as complicated as it was, though he still has potential to screw it up. And Melrose Plant is still something of an idiot about basic things, but a useful character nonetheless. Plus the inclusion of the cat mystery, and the other animals, always improves these stories (I am remarkably fond of Mungo, despite how much he picks on little Elf).

What to do with this book now? Not sure. May do a themed wild release if I can't come up with another idea.
