This was an interesting novel, with a childish but well-pictured heroine and an unexpected ending. In the beginning I always had the impression the writer was too polite and too formal with and about her characters, as she kept Mr and Mrs-ing them. I got used to this habit after a while and it started to get a little bit more dynamic.

I particularly enjoyed the french replies and the honest way of portraying Edna. I guess it can be pretty hard to picture a hesitant character, as opposed to a single-dimensional one. Anyway, a pretty libertine and feminist portrait of an unsecure woman, taking into consideration the epoch.

Thanks again to Marsala for sharing!

This slim volume packs in a lot of insight into the nature of some very different characters, as well as providing a glimspe into the society of a particular time and place. It's beautifully written.

I may put this back into round 2 of the 1001 Euro VBB, so I won't return it to the 1001-library just yet.

That was quick! Thanks for sending this.

After a couple of false starts, I really got stuck in today.

Edna Pontellier is a discontent wife who falls for a young man while holidaying at the Grand Isle Resort.

Edna has married into a Creole family, part of a close-knit community. She is married to Léonce Pontellier, a traditional man, and they have two children. Edna is unsatisfied, and when Robert lavishes her with attention, against her initial hesitations, she lets him into her heart. He is a young man with dreams, whereas Edna is a woman who needs more in her life. Robert is more than a romantic diversion, he is the catalyst for Edna to change her own life. Unfortunately Robert sparks a change in Edna's life, but is scared of what he has started.

When you think about when the book was written, it is easy to believe that this book must have caused quite a storm on its launch. Especially as it was written by a woman. Chopin captures the frustration of a wife bound by society's norms, and how hard it is to fight against those constraints. I did enjoy the book, tragic as it was, probably because of the sympathetic portrayal of Edna.

Thanks Soffitta1! Arrived today :)

A nice skinny 1001 book, to counter the many 1001 housebricks currently on my TBR.
