This book was made into a movie with Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Timothy Hutton. It's about a family that looses a son and comes apart at the seams. The surviving son feels guilt, the mother thinks only of the dead son, and the father is caught between the two. I thought the movie was very powerful and true to life. I must admit I didn't read the book. This was recently given to me.

Seventeen-year-old Conrad Jarrett returns to his parents' home and tries to build a new life for himself after spending eight months in a mental institution for attempted suicide.

This book was entitled Ordinary People, but these are some of the most unforgettable 'ordinary people' I've ever met. (Yes, I do feel as though I've met them.) The characters are really well drawn and the book is heart-wrenchingly sad. An excellent story.

I'm placing this on the Relay so it can keep moving to other appreciative readers. It's going in the 'Character Crazy' relay, and I can't think of a more appropriate place for it!

Thank you so much, ILuvToRead2, for sharing this one with me!

8 out of 10

This was a lucky find. On holiday wandering through the streets of Athens myself, I found this book on the 26th of december. It features around christmas and describes the exceptional lives of "ordinary people". As it was Christmastime the content was very appropriate. I took it home with me and read most of it flying from Greece to Holland. I'll leave this book somewhere in the streets of Den Haag (The Hague, the Netherlands) and let it wander some more.
