Finally picked this book up at a used bookstore after having it on my reading list since it was published. I loved the concept and I was hooked right away. What I didn't like were the characterizations. I felt that neither of the characters were particularly likeable; Emma was so self-deprecating and sarcastic it was irritating, and Dexter was a spoiled rich drunkard. I couldn't understand why these two felt attracted to each other. It was only during the last few chapters that I started to like them. However, I couldn't put the book down as I was still fascinated to see where these two ended up each year.

Lots of good hype with this book, and I think deservedly so. While it did not necessarily blow me away, it was absorbing & is one of those novels that stick with you long after you've finished reading. The format is unique in that each chapter takes place on the same day (July 15) of subsequent years, giving the reader a peek into the lives of Dexter & Emily as their relationship changes & develops over the span of nearly 20 years. This is a bittersweet novel -- I'm still trying to come to terms with how it was wrapped up -- but I look forward to discussing it at my upcoming book club meeting.

I enjoyed this book! I had trouble liking Dexter but he grew on me, as he grew up in the story. I liked how she took us back to the day they met again at the end of the novel, that was nice. It provided more details and explainations to the start of their relationship. I would like to rent the DVD now and see if it is like the book or not...
