Last summer, after reading Kathleen Cambor's "In Sunlight, In A Beautiful Garden," I travelled to Johnstown, Pa., to learn more about the Great Flood of 1889 and see the places I had just read about. The Johnstown Flood National Memorial is not only filled with photos of the victims and survivors and the devastation of the flood, but also listening stations where you can hear flood survivor Victor Heiser tell his story about what happened in Johnstown on Memorial Day 1889.

That, as well as all I saw in Johnstown, spurred me to find this audiobook by David McCullough, which has long been recognized as the most complete account of the Great Flood. This book was originally published in 1968, while survivors of the flood were still alive to tell their stories—and what stories they are! The before, the during, and the after are so wonderfully and heartbreakingly recounted that I feel the need to return to Johnstown to see it again and pay my respects.
