Book cover: Schoolboys are disappearing all over Aberystwyth and nobody knows why. Louie Knight, the town's private investigator, soon realises that it is going to take more than a double ripple from Sospan, the philosopher cum ice-cream seller, to help find out what is happening to these boys and whether or not Lovespoon, the Welsh teacher, Grand Wizard of the Druids and controller of the town, is more than just a sinister bully. And just who was Gwenno Guevara?

‘Promises to do for Aberystwyth what Irvine Welsh has done for Edinburgh. I wish that all first novels could be written with such cadence, such panache and such abundant comic talent’ DAILY TELEGRAPH
‘Not just a supremely accomplished pulp fiction pastiche but a gloriously funny and scabrous satire in the kind of malevolent kitsch that too often passes for Welsh culture. JOHN WILLIAMS
‘Very black and very funny indeed…mixes satire, farce, fantasy and comic strip in a world where The Famous Five meets Raymond Chandler’ TLS

I kept picking this up but it’s no use I hate this sort of thing. I can’t find the humour, the dialogue irritates me and I feel like I am hanging on forever in a puzzled pickle to just understand what all the observations are aiming to reveal. I end up thinking that’s it? And, so what, do I care…?

Hum, all that strength of feeling...just sour grapes as I have not read enough to get the references so feel left out of the fun? Time...I released this for someone else to find and who knows perhaps fall in love with!

I really enjoyed this book, it is very much in the vein of Jasper Fforde - in other words a totally quirky spin on reality but this one has a noir twist to it. I look forward to reading more in this series.

Taking to the meet up tonight, Biblos on Chambers Street, Edinburgh

I picked this up thinking it was by Jasper Fforde (maybe that was just me being a bit dim, maybe the covers are similar?). Anyway, had struggled through 100 pages or so (ignoring the 50 pages rule) before I realised I'd got it wrong.

I couldn't get into this sadly, not my sense of humour I think - although it did remind me slightly of the Beiderbeck Affair (strange characters in an ordinary seeming town), which I loved. So, giving up and sending it on its way so that somebody else can enjoy!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book - quite witty with absurd characters but I do love Jasper Fforde too so I could see the similarities but judging from the previous JEs, it's either your cup of tea or it isn't.Found myself giggling away most of the time.

Caught the book during the meet-up at the Biblios 2 days ago.
I didn't want to take any book but when I was told it's a bit like Jasper Fforde's books I just couldn't resist...

FINALLY the book made it to the summit of mount TBR.
It took my a while to get into it but then I enjoyed it thoroughly. I think it's funny, interesting and full of suspense. It definitely felt "fford-ish"!
I will never see tea cosies the way I saw them before I read the book... might need one actually...
