Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

Seriously, Mary Roach examines numerous ways a body can be used post-mortem - from organ donation, to cremation, fertilizing trees, and various levels of medical and scientific research. And all with great humour and insight. A really good read, unless you are squeamish, or if you object to juvenile humour, or if you're AFRAID OF DEATH!

Stiff arrived today! That was very fast, indeed!
Thank you so much Chris for this generous RABCK. :)
I've read the first paragraph of the intro and it promises to be an interesting and fun book, despite the seemingly somber subject matter. ;)
I think this one will be first on my list after I've caught up on all my rings and rays. And after that it'll probably become a ray, if there'll be any interest in it.
Chris, I started reading the book yesterday and I couldn't put it down. It is marvellously funny! So much so that I didn't dare take it with me into town to read on the bus... I would've gotten some weird looks for snorting with laughter - and I NEVER snort! ;D
Finally finished this fabulous book! Yes, it took me quite a while, but that just speaks about the quantity of rings and rays that came while I was reading it, which had to take priority, as well as about my overworked-have-no-time-for-books lifestyle these past few months. :)
The author has a wonderful sense of humour (which might not be to everyone's liking) and a way of putting things into perspective. This is one seriously funny book. Not all the time, but when you hit a humorous spot after a serious passage, chances are you'll snort out loud with laughter. If you do not like to be stared at, it is highly recommended not to read this one on public transport and in public places in general. ;)
I enjoyed finding out in what imaginative, useful and weird ways human cadavers have been used so far in order to better our knowledge about many things: from human anatomy to car safety - with many gruesome, intriguing and surprising stops on the way.
Thank you, Chris, for sending this one my way, it's definitely one of my favourites this year! :) It will now go share its weird and humorous wonder as part of Vekiki's European Non-fiction VBB.

Edited, November 13:
We've been patiently waiting, but alas, more than one full month later, the book has not yet arrived at its destination. It would seem the postal monster has sunk its teeth into it, and the goodies accompanying it. :(
Yay! I was afraid that the P.O. Monster had munched him up. Yummy!
I'm not letting him into the postal system again, though, poor Stiff! ;)))
It will be travelling back to UK, with me, to be handed over in person.
No, I'm not travelling just to hand him over, I'm going on holidays! I may be a bit daft sometimes, but I'm not THAT daft. Well, actually, I might be if I had the finances for such whimsy. Hihihihi :D
It was good to meet you today, shame the walk was so washed out! But thankyou for bringing this with you, I'm looking forward to it

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
well, I didn;t enjoy this as much as 'Bonk' - not as funny, not as many footnotes. But still a good few giggles, and lots of really interesting content - really well researched too.
Off as part of my (nearly) 1000 books registered RABCK - spotted this on your wishlist, and since I had to post out to you anyway - i figured 2 birds with one stone.... anyway, thanks for helping me celebrate, and I hope you like the book!
This sounds very uhm.. interesting.. looking forward to read it :) (makes me think of the classes at university studying human cadavers :p).
